Two late thoughts:

Firstly, since the implication is that, as a head-on tackler, you must no longer go into contact upright, does this mean the end of the choke tackle?

And secondly, instinct tells me that trying to go low to tackle in a head-on situation might easily lead to getting a knee to the head - is that not at least as dangerous as being punched and likely to lead to serious concussion danger for the tackler?

Just wondering!

If you can wrap someone up, especially from the side, or if there's a significant height difference, I don't see why the choke tackle would go. Just don't bank on being safe when you sprint at someone and hit them effectively face first. Bassett is one of our's that I'd fear getting in trouble for similar, he's often fearless in how he goes in too, and could easily end up in the same boat.

I think there's plenty of video from the likes of Worsley or Lydiate that players could study showing how to tackle low, even head on.

Albeit not ankle tackles, Fekitoa has put in some spectacular waist high tackles head on that have essentially killed the momentum of the opposition.

The problem isn't that players can't tackle low, is that they've been trained over so many years to take man and ball to stop the offload.
Tacking low allows an offload, and for many years that's been seen as bad

Worsley could do effective choke tackles too when required. He did one against Saints in the Tetley Cup Final to stop a probable try, which would gave given them the lead in the latter stages. Not sure it was head on though. We then went down the other end and scored ourselves to seal it.
