Special talents ready to soar in 2022
« on: January 03, 2022, 08:43:43 AM »
Extract from the article by Alex Lowe in the Times :

ALFIE BARBEARY
(England rugby union player, 21)
Could light up . . . the Six Nations By Alex Lowe

A run of injuries was all that prevented 2021 from being Barbeary’s breakthrough year on the international stage. The uncapped Wasps loose forward has already made a sizeable imprint on the Gallagher Premiership with his destructive, dynamic ball-carrying and intelligent offloading. Barbeary was a hooker for England Under-20 and Eddie Jones first picked him in the autumn of 2020 with the No 2 jersey in mind, even though all of his club rugby had been in the back row. Barbeary, Wasps and England now agree the way forward is for him to leave behind the set-piece requirements of being a hooker and focus on his development as a loose forward.

I really don’t want Alfie picked for the 6 nations. He has only just come back for a long injury and hasn’t even played a full 80 minutes.

He needs more game time to improve, he currently isn’t at his best at the moment.

If he was picked it will be just like Paolo, no game time and his progress will stop.

I think most Wasps fans are thinking the same - not yet. Unfortunately I don’t think Eddie will concur. Even worse I see him in the bracket of come and join in but you’re not ready to play. Game time is better for Barbeary at the minute in my opinion.

This. And I really don't want him to end up in limbo because Jones hasn't really worked out how he wants to play.....
