This has rather got away from me. I was very surprised to learn (today) from a Welsh friend of mine that Tomos Williams and Harry Randall both have Welsh as their first language!

This was my original question: Which 2 scrum halves have Welsh as their first language and started at international level against each other?

Apologies all, particularly Nelly ;) but I should have used the future tense but I thought that would give the game away.

I was even more astonished to since learn that Stephen Varney (Italy) is also a Welsh speaker. Gareth Edwards is, of course, possibly the best known Welsh speaker.

PS. If Dobby went to Welsh language classes would it round out his game even more.

I knew Stephen was, as I have heard him speaking Welsh conversationally at some point on a video I watched, or maybe on a Welsh TV recording of an interview. Does that mean I was right, but not the two you had in mind? I am sure they started in that game on 1 Feb 2022.

For a bit of fun, here is Tomos 7 minutes in to the game having a try disallowed:

3rd Welsh player to touch the ball, then last, of course. One side of the field to the other. Classic supporting scrum half.

Wales haven't played Italy yet this 6 nations and varney and tomos Williams haven't played against each other in the previous games. Lloyd Williams, who is also a Welsh speaker, was on the bench against Italy last season which Varney also played in but not sure if on at the same time.

The 2 I had were Varney and Randall from the Italy v England game in the last 6 nations round.

I suppose you could pose a variation of the question by asking, which two tier 1 nations, excluding Wales, have Welsh speaking scrum halves!

I don’t know the answer to this one, but on a similar theme: it can’t have happened too often that 2 players from the same club side have faced each other as captains of their respective  national sides?

Apparently 5th time in 6 nations, although 2 occasions were the same people, and twice more in 5 nations, i was surprised how many.

That is a surprise, especially when you one of them probably isn't captaining his club side regularly.
