I would love to know what the touch saw when calling 'red, red, red'. Most of us on tv saw the hookers standing up, and thought that their TH was angling in and not driving straight, maybe glaws fans would point the finger at West, because, you know Glaws fans and all that, but either way I really cannot see how hookers were the issue. Carley may have seen another reason, but I suspect he simply thought the props were driving straight enough and thus had to penalise. I am, however, first to admit I know nothing about the scrum, and am of the opinion they are best seen from 20 to 30 m away, from where it is obvious that their side is at fault.  ;)

As an ex front row (hooker/TH prop) I could see that Balmain was not pushing straight from the first scrum and was boring in on Gabby which also then pushed Singleton up. Carley or anyone else let him do it so he carried on (can you blame him as it was working). In the old days someone would lamp him but you're not allowed to sort it out yourself these days which is a shame :(  And as for binning both hookers neither of whom were responsible - very weak decision. I wonder what the officials actually think they see. I would be quite prepared to argue this face to face with Carley or any others of his crew.

In coms even Ed Slater, wearing cherry and white tinted glasses, pointed out that it was probably Balmain at fault, and nothing to do with the hookers.

It was ******* obvious from the first scrum that the issue was Balmain boring in on Gabriel. Carley needs to go back to referee school.

In the front row you do anything you can get away with to get an advantage.

In my first season at hooker the only scrum I lost against the head was in the league playoff final. My opposite number had very long legs (unusual for a hooker) and simply got over the ball and my striking leg. At the next scrum the same thing happened. This time I dived into their 2nd row to retrieve the ball, couldn't reach it so I took the scrum down. Penalty to us. Result!

If I'm looking to award the benefit of the doubt to the ref then maybe given his close proximity to the scrum is hard to see the exact angles of the props.

So, if we assume that the ref has decided that the props are mostly driving straight, then he probably see Oghre squeezing their hooker and causing the stand up.

More than likely, he actually sees repeated problems with the hookers and has already dismissed the idea of it being a prop at fault and therefore feels new hookers solves the problem.

It does feel quite a weak argument though

Agree 100%, I’m also old 🥊

Frankly I’m astonished Carley got it so wrong. Blatantly obvious the prop is boring in.
