It's the same as Christian Wade - people double  mark him which creates space elsewhere.  Sure he will have more eye-catching cameos coming off the bench against a tiring defence however it makes the time he is on the bench that much easier for the opposition

Don't think he has the absolute pace to be a flanker so 8 it is.

I think it's often less effective with the double marking in the tight.

With Wade, the opposition back line has to stretch to cover him, sometimes creating gaps.
With a forward, the double marking often doesn't create as much space because there's so many forwards tight around the breakdown anyway

Think this is where our attacking game needs to develop this season, if Alfie, Tom W or any other big carriers can commit two or even three defenders and off load there is then space out wide.
Not on the stats but I would hazard a guess that we were near bottom on (completed) offloads last year.

We still seemed to be trying one out runners a fair bit at Glaws but we seemed a little sharper with Dobby switching depths, distancing and sides with his passing to those runners.
Tip ons and offloads take us another level on with our attack but they realistically can only come with improved skills and confidence.

Our offloading over the last season or so has seemed very high risk / minimal reward.
It's like we're trying to force the kind of open play game we had a few years prior where we always kept the ball alive.

If we could develop a fast offloading game that didn't involve hail Mary offloads, but rather simpler offloads to supporting runners, then we may be able to take advantage of double marking.

If we just hold onto the ball and a ruck forms, modern defences rarely commit bodies, so the 2 or 3 tacklers involved don't allow for many gaps to exist.

If it's something that we can exploit it has to be done at pace and requires all players to be switched on all the time.
Unfortunately that doesn't sound like I'm describing the current Wasps team

Tom topped the stats for metres made and defenders beaten last season, even with his limited game time towards the end. You want to get over the gain line, you pick Tom at 8. If that means Alfie sits on the bench, so be it. Until he demands selection - which at the minute he isn't - he sits behind Tom in my view.

This ☝️

Tom has a great fend of with either had and is strong enough that the ball doesn’t get stripped from the other, that’s why he makes so many meters.
