Booing at Bristol
« on: February 17, 2019, 08:05:49 PM »
Extended highlights now on BT Sport, what was really disappointing was Bristol 'supporters' booing Lima when he was kicking and when the ball went over. Also booing clearly audible at the end, I understand the frustration but booing is not what rugby is about.....hmmmm.

Noticed that too. Also not much of a crowd compared to footy crowd there today.
During Friday's match the lines were confusing but today the rugby lines had virtually disappeared.

I agree completely with what you're saying, however, I doubt a professional rugby player, in the zone, 30 yards away from the nearest fan is affected by it at all, and probably doesn't even hear it.

From an atmosphere and fair play perspective, it's poor, but for the game itself, I'd be amazed if it has any direct effect

For me it is more about values, something I have always valued is respecting a team, player or result regardless of whether I like the outcome or not. It didn't affect Lima, nevertheless it isn't something I appreciate creeping into the game, it happens at The Ricoh on occasion. One of Rugby Union's greatest strengths is respect and it is a game for everyone, where the sport is the thing not just the result.I coach age grade and major on respect and the importance of the laws and values, those are some of the things that make rugby special.

Sad to hear booing, no need for it.

Fairly common in France unfortunately. Also quite noisy in SH games.

I watched the entire game a couple of hours later. The football markings were definitely confusing. Willie in particular gave away an unnecessary lineout which I think lead to a Briz try. I thought it was very poor that greater effort had not been made to obscure the footie markings.
As for the booing during kicks, I think Friday night crowds in general often seem to be a different set of spectators

I’d like to think that we’re usually respectful at the Ricoh but whether justified or not, I’ve noticed that the booing at the Ricoh during kicks does tend to be after a seemingly dubious penalty/try that should’ve been checked by the TMO.

Sadly I think the game won’t stick to the silence at kicks for much longer, but I’d like to think it won’t affect the pros too much.

We were sat in the Dolman stand, all the Bristol supporters around us were most hospitable (save for the 8 years old 2 seats down who sprayed me with imaginary wasp repellent and told us we were the enemy😊).

My recollection was that the only booing of kicks was the final one we had and, whilst not something we want, I am sure the heat of the moment and the game being in the balance was too much to bear for some. Perhaps it was different elsewhere in the ground. Where we were there was plenty of good-natured “discussion” and “abuse”, especially once they started to catch up, I would do there again in a thrice.

Great ground (and was able to get chips with curry sauce so very impressed), seemed more like a home ground than a place they go to play which is how parts of the Ricoh sometimes feel (though I caveat that with my never having time to visit the fan village as always on a tight turnaround to get home for the dog, so might not have had the full experience). They could do a better job with the touchlines.

The only complaint I had was that the people behind us seems to want to talk incessantly about things not relevant to the game (for instance I now know the price of a telegraph pole), it was like having my own personal Nick Mullins commentary.

Great result, let’s hope Sale don’t have a rebound.

I sat with my friend a Bristol STH. He said the booing was very unusual and wondered if different people came on a Friday evening, not a night they have played on very often.

I'm curious now.
How much is a telegraph pole?
and is the price just for the pole, or to have it fitted too?

The figure GBP4K was being bandied about, so that might be for multiple ones, or one including fitting. I managed to zone them out at that point, intriguing as it was.

We were sat in the Dolman stand, all the Bristol supporters around us were most hospitable ........

We were also in the Doleman stand and like you everyone was quite friendly, biggest issue was a group who spent most of the match walking back and forwards to the bar and seeming to inconvenience people as much as possible, to the point someone who was obviously a regular had a right go at them.

There was someone behind whose vocabulary went rapidly downhill as the game went on, that was mainly due to the way they were playing.   :)

I would have said there was more booing in the run-up to the conversion at the end of the 1st half as we ran down the clock, but overall I thought there was more than I had heard elsewhere, although Kingsholm is usually pretty bad.
Pretty much every tackle by a Wasps player was high, every pass forward and we were always offside.

It was my 1st visit to Ashton Gate and I'd like to go back on a weekend day (like it should have been this time) for a look around Bristol as it looked quite nice as we drove through on the way home.
