No excuses for the capitulation but Josh's try was a try
« on: May 06, 2019, 08:12:52 AM »
Have to agree with Healey here....this was a work of art, only to be ruled out by another shocking decision by a TMO, there has to be an improvement in referring standards. This is by no means an excuse for what was another poor performance after a bright start but I am outraged by this.

"Let it stand! Or I'm packing this job in"
Wasps put together a beautiful move to land a third try against Bath, only for the referee to refer to video to rule it out for a forward pass... and Austin Healey has a strong opinion on the decision.

It was fine when I left it.....

I have to agree. Refereeing/officiating standards are poor.

But ... Wasps lost that game. When key players came off or went missing (Jamma), we had no depth to replace them. Bath did. Bath made good decisions, we made very poor ones. Wasps, as they stand right now, and for most of the season, have not fielded a team. Just a bunch of guys with a 'bring yer boats and wing it' attitude. Not all of them, but it takes 23 all on the same page to win a game, and we regularly have fielded way less than 23 that have that mindset. WLR and Daly are but two examples.

If it were me, there would be no jaunts off to UAE etc, the new squad would be doing what we used to do when I played for my school. We had summer camp almost every day every week where we built tactics and team cohesion.

The intervention seems to have initially come from the touch judge. What I struggle to understand is how some people (and in this case the touch judge and tmo) cannot grasp the principle that the ball can travel forward whilst being passed backwards.. its to do with forward momentum on the passing player.

If you are running at 10 mph and throw the ball back over your head (proving that it has gone backwards out of your hands) the ball will most likely land ahead of the position where it it left your hands..

A forward pass is determined by how the ball leaves the hands (sideways, backwards or forwards) not where the ball ends up in relation to when it left the players hands.

The other point that I thought TMO's and ref's had been reminded of is that TMO's should only rule on something that's clear and obvious.

I sometimes wonder if some officials (especially those acting as TMO's) actually ever played rugby

Wot no hols, Nelly? None at all? Did the squad go to UAE? I don't think so.

Just a bunch of guys with a 'bring yer boats and wing it' attitude.

I know the rec gets a bit waterlogged and muddy but really.......

It was a try, end of really.

I am pretty sure all the refs understand the basic physics, not sure about all the players and ex players you get on commentary and fans on fora. I can remember one or two comments saying "it is simple, if it goes forward from where it is passed it is forward". Unless you sit each one of them down and physically show them with a tracker what happens to a ball when it is thrown sideways whilst running you won't convince them.
I have heard people say "I don't want to hear about physics/momentum etc. ", which is like saying "I don't want to hear about gravity" when discussing space rockets or tides.

I think the phrase "nothing clear and obvious" did not need applying here, there was no evidence it was forward from any angle.

I try really hard not to complain about the ref as I firmly believe that poor decisions usually even themselves out in the end. But this season we have suffered with some truly shocking calls.

It's almost as if we have a reputation with the team of refs and they are looking for us to commit offences they have already decided we will.

Our scrum has been given a thumbs up by refs.

Yesterday's officiating team, notably the touch judge, have clearly not watched - or forgotten the lessons - of this IRB video.

The JP shocker at Welford Road and Pearce's/TMO combined cock up yesterday were both away from home. Coincidence? JP cost us the game and 4 points. Whether yesterday's disallowed try cost us the game is moot as it happened much earlier, just before half time. Had both tries stood and both games (possibly) won, then we would be firmly in top 6 and in the mix for top 4. Fine margins. There must be a better way. Available camera angles and mark 1 eyeballs are simply not good enough.

Touch judge called in real time and the tmo said it came forward out of the hand, that’s why it was disallowed, simple as that.

Unfortunately Pearce didn’t seem to look too much into it himself and the tmo was wrong. We move on
