This is overdue for me. I think Vellacott is a good bit better than Porter and Wolstenholme at the moment. Porter is fiery and combative but I think he's very readable. If you are the opposition I think you know exactly what he's going to do. Wolstenholme zips it off the base nicely but is still a work in progress. Both will develop but in the here and now I have Vellacott as second choice by some way.

On his pre-injury form, I think Velacott offered a genuine alternative to Robson.  Maybe not quite threatening to take the shirt off him, but at least getting close.  Since the injury he's not looked anywhere near his best, and lost his place as a result.  It was a long lay off so will take time to recover fully.  Hope he's back to somewhere near his best.

Not saying you are wrong, but on what are you basing this?
Vellacott has hardly played & he was playing in Wasps teams without focus & drive.
The 2 youngsters have been playing well in teams also playing well (last weekend excepted)

not sure how can you conclude anything from that?

I'm basing it on Vellacott's time at Gloucester, his games post lockdown last season and his games this year. At various times during those spells he's been outstanding and mooted as an international by some. He has also acquired big game experience. Porter and Wolstenholme are prospects. In the case of Wolstenholme I think a very good one. Porter, in my opinion, has more to prove. I just think as it stands Vellacott should be back playing.

Have been reading comments made on here re Vellacott signing ( Jan 2019 , rumour and signing threads)

Most were looking forward to him coming , thinking he played similar to Dobby and an ideal replacement for Simpson who was getting slower.

Indeed I seem to remember on other board I seem to remember it was more a case of us getting the better deal due to the age of  Joe compared to Ben.

Honestly I've seen absolutely nothing from Vellacott to justify him being better than Wolstenholme or Porter. If he showcased being better than them, I'd support him more.

Having seen Vellacott play, when he had an absolute blinder (alongside Danny) when Glaws stuffed us at the Ricoh, I thought that he had a really good career ahead of him. Subsequently, I was really pleased when he joined Wasps. Expectations have not been met but he did pick up a nasty injury at the Prem 7s preseason when he joined and since then, has not looked the same player.

Rewind to Adams Park when Eng U20 played Ireland about 10 years ago. Eng won and took the VI nations as a result. A certain Dobby got MoM and I thought then that he was one who caould make it to the top. He has not disappointed.

I've not looked into it, but since his injury, how many minutes / games / consecutive games has he been involved in?

We've had players in the past coming back from injury who needed a good run of games before they got their mojo back (whether that be physical / mental or other).

I remember Vellacott being involved in some games, then I remember porter and wusty getting some game time too, but I don't recall how many games he got, whether he was starting regularly or how many games in a row he got

As said above, there's also an argument for how well the team as a whole were performing at that time too.

We had comments last week that our lack of direction wasn't necessarily the fault of the fly half because he was getting slow service from the 9.
Also, the 9 was being pressured because we didn't have our best back row available etc.

I don't know anything about scrum half play, and I can't remember what our performances were like with Vellacott playing, but I wouldn't be so ready to ditch him based on a few games immediately post injury

I only recall him starting 1 game so far this season??? In that he was truly poor, on that showing, I have him at the back of the 4 until he recovers some form, that said, he needs some game time to do that.

He's had 1 start, against Bears, and come on twice as a replacement, Gloucester and Montpellier.

I don't remember him making an impression.

I'm not sure how anyone on here can either call for his inclusion or write him off. The coaches see him every day in training, if they see him doing the right tings they'll select him, obviously at the moment they are seeing the other three 9s doing better stuff.

Vellacott got 6/10 from Bobby after the Bears game in a match where no-one got a mark above 7.

Seems to me the jury is still out on Ben and I think Blackett is waiting for one of his 9's to establish themselves as the no 1 back up to Dobby

I wonder if we might not see him on the wing given how short we are in the back 3
