This weekend's whistler
« on: March 17, 2021, 11:37:02 AM »
Ref for Friday is Anthony Woodthorpe .
Stated to be his fifth/sixth Premiership game.
Anyone know his style eg whistle happy/stop-start/lets the game flow etc?
ARs are Wayne Falla and John Meredith, TMO Graham Hughes.

Do not wish to pre judge, but am surprised that there isn't a more experienced AR (I.e. another premiership ref).

Wasps are played 1, won 1 under Woodthorpe (Bath at home last season).

Karl Dickson is AR for Scotland v Italy. Luke Pearce is Ref for France v Wales, with Carley and Ridley as his ARs and Wayne Barnes as TMO.

I suspect it's a case of making the most of whoever is available for officials this weekend.

Especially if Lee has been speaking about referee perception I would have hoped a more experienced one for this match when there are few clashes on the day.

We're in danger of looking like we're expecting to lose against bad decisions and getting our retaliation in first.

Both sides have the same problem of not knowing his track record on interpretation of the laws in key areas and its up to the players, especially the senior players, to be smart and play what's in front of them and adjust as required sad the game unfolds.

Hopefully Joe will be back as skipper so we can make have a fresh start. (That's not a dig at Brad or YY, but obviously there's been problems in the past few games and a different approach is needed.)

I’d hope that the relatively new Woodthorpe would consciously want to avoid unconscious bias to prove his professionalism & impartiality. Likewise neither team knows his refereeing style so it should be a clean slate for all parties. With the return of Launchbury, Brookes and Barbeary this has to be a turn around performance. No excuse, even at 9, will be acceptable.

Is that possible??  (One for the psychologists!) :)

One advantage of the Championship starting is that tier 2, or however they are classed, refs can get some experience and the authorities can judge who is worthy of moving up to Premier League games.
