I'm sure I've watched a game over the week-end where the commentators have said that the little black rubber pellets dispersed onto plastic pitches will be banned and that clubs will now have to use sand.. that doesn't effect hybrids though that are 90% grass but it will affect a few clubs.

Suspect it will be ones made from old tyres, which contain trace amounts of heavy metals like cadmium. Sand would be abrasive wouldn't it, wouldn't fancy sliding on it.

Some countries banned the black rubber bits as they contain carcinogens. Just as well most schools that have plastic pitches have used this type then.

Which is just another good reason why all plastic pitches should be banned.

Isn't the black bits crumbed tyres? They are there large bits, the smaller particles can get breathed in which is where the problem lies. There's nasty stuff in tyres.

You are right, they do seem a bit flat when they play there.

Sorry to derail the thread a little, but Wuss use coconut husk, could be a potential alternative.

Love playing devils advocate in this area as I’m doing some research in playing surfaces.
No increase in injury prevalence between grass and artificial.
Lots more game time that can be played on artificial.
Community benefits...
Agree that the rubbercrumb is a bit crap and any innovation away from it would be hugely celebrated.
