Dream Wasps 7’s Team
« on: March 28, 2020, 09:42:43 AM »
So was flicking through highlights on YouTube last night of previous seasons and obviously came across our incredible sevens teams over the years.

Got my thinking, we all have a dream XV for Wasps, but what would your dream 7’s team be?. We have had some incredible players over the years but would be interesting to see which would fit into 7s game.

So I chose 15 players... (starting 7 and 5 subs as allowed)

Thought it might be interesting and help pass what would be a bonus point home win over Worcester today 😬.

So I went for (also being 26, only really started watching a lot of wasps from 2000 onwards)

1. G.Thompson
2. T.Young
3. T. Rees
4. D.Robson
5. R. Flutey
6. C. Wade
7. C. Sirker

Subs: J. Worsley, Dallaglio, Beale, Daly, lewsey

Hard though leaving out some cracking players!

An interesting question.

I'd struggle to leave out Simmo who would have been in the GB team for the Olympics if he hadn't got injured.

Charlie Hayter never got much love when he was with us, but went on to be part of the national 7s set up.

And any game where flat speed is an important aspect should have TV2 involved imo.

I would have liked to see Stuart Abbott play sevens. His ability to beat the man in front was exceptional.
Agree about Tom Rees.
Josh Lewsey?

Simmo and cips hard to leave out but tackling slightly weak... Abbott and hayter are great shouts.

People like Neal and Odogwu (record try scorer in prem 7s).

Forwards are hard to pick. Hask used to play 7s too but wouldn’t pick now.

Carr? Le Roux, Piatau? So many fun options

I'd have the following 7

Wade
Simpson
Tom Rees
Josh Lewsey
Dallaglio (in his earlier days)
Sirker
Flutey

I forgot Chariots played for us for a year. Not many teams he wouldn't get in at his best.

Flutey is an interesting call. Skillful, but you would have to build the team around him and keep him on every game. which is a risk.

Can't believe no one's mentioned Simon Amor.

How many games did Amor play for Wasps?

Not many admittedly. What did he have? 2 seasons? Primarily as a back up scrum half to Howley/Dawson (not sure of exact timings). Captained the Wasps side that won the Middlesex 7s at Twickenham some time sound the mid/late 00s (with Cipriani amongst others). One of the all time great 7s players.

Well, we are blessed with too much choice and its really hard to get down to 7 and I have little idea if they would blend....however, looking at some vids and thinking back....

Wade
Varndell
Simpson
Lewsey
Rees
Young Lol
Willis

Which leaves out so much magic like Alex King, Joe W, Fraser W, Dawson, Dom W, Mark van G, Howley, Tom Voyce, Paul Sackey, let alone 2x Piutau's and others!

Thom Evans too.

Also Will Wilson is a current 7s veteran alongside Sirker.

And Phil Greening.

For actual 7s experience you've got to have:

Greening
Amor
Sirker
Hayter
Varndell
Wade
Lewsey
