OT - Why are supermarkets still selling free-range eggs?

Went to do our weekly shop yesterday evening, and popped into Sainsbury's and Morrisons (High Wycombe).

We never buy eggs as we keep chickens, but noticed both had stocks of "British free range eggs".

However, since early December, all chickens, whether commercial or privately owned, in Britain have had to be kept indoors, under DEFRA Avian Flu regulations - our chickens are really peed-off about it!

Now, it is usual to sell eggs within 21 days of laying, so there is no way that any British free-range eggs on sale now could be free-range.

So how would you brand them - 'covid restricted' eggs? I do take your point though.

I just assumed they were all indoors with VR headsets on with views of flowing fields.



Just had a look around and it's not just supermarkets, the farm shops I checked are all advertising as free range too.

But how could they justify chargng a premium for them if they're just normal eggs?

I only buy free-range eggs for home.

The hens may not be free to roam outside at the moment, but being indoors in a cosy barn is not the same as being held in the appalling conditions of a battery farm.
