"Just about everything in life is a teachable skill. You just need a good teacher and a mindset of pure possibility. Which is also teachable."

I don't buy this, Hopwood. Average is teachable. The rest is natural.

Hi backdoc.
Can you please define 'natural'?
Where does 'natural' come from?

Genetic.

And it helps if your dad was a Pro player and was showing you how to pass when a child, or you had to walk 6 miles to school if you lived in Kenya or Ethiopia and you became a runner.

But not education/teaching/training as the educationalists would have you believe [a very sore point in Medicine, this].

I more or less agree with hopwood on this. If he works hard enough to get this far, he can work hard enough to fix this part of his game. The issue is working to how to fix it - is it more practice in training, is it more practise in live games at a lower level, or is it something that can be dealt with through a sports psychologist?

Also, while it is fair to give this some attention, especially given it is not the first time Oghre has thrown short, we must also consider the player's who gave key penalties away, dropped the ball over the line, missed kicks, and missed tackles. We win as a team, lose as a team.

Finally, speaking as someone who studies quantitative genetics for a living, the idea that the majority of an elite athlete's performance is genetic is exceedingly difficult to believe.

Do we have a specialist coach who can really help him? Forwards coach might be a bit too general

Neil Fowkes is the listed Forwards Coach and I believe he still has input.

You contradict yourself.
You say it’s all genetics....hence it’s ‘natural’.
And then you say it’s about learned behaviour through mirroring your father. Or having to walk long distances through necessity.
Neither of which are ‘natural’ but learned behaviours and skills.

Take a while to consider your thoughts. No rush.
But unless you’re saying everyone’s progress and potential in life is 100% genetics, then surely it’s about what we learn and absorb through life. Our conditioning. All of which can be (theoretically) taught...and untaught.

In my previous post I said that if players had got to the position of being a pro rugby player (whereby genetics have played some part)...then everything else needed to succeed can be taught.
And I stand by that.

The word ‘natural’ doesn’t come into my line of work, because it acts as a limiting belief for those not garnered with the label and it acts as a deterrent to work hard for those that are labelled.
I find the word nonsensical.

In my world...belief, attitude and effort, with a willingness to expand your mental awareness...are everything.
Genetics might determine which path you choose, but then it’s down to being open-minded and keen to learn.
