Can't understand how the players haven't organised themselves to universally say NO to these pitches.

Agreed. They are terrible - especially for a game like rugby. Ban them.

Many moons ago when plastic surfaces were first introduced I asked Si Mac and Sam Jones  about them , and they hated the things then.  Simon said that the plastic  all pilled, like grains of sand,  and went everywhere but everywhere.  Showering and bathing didn't clear it  and it was days before you got rid of it.  Hopefully it didn't get breathed into the lungs.

Would imagine these pitches are even worse in high temperatures like Saturday.
