Matios Moroni
« on: June 22, 2022, 09:25:32 AM »
Confirmed to be leaving Leicester Tigers and appears to be on his way to Newcastle.

I'm a little surprised he isn't being linked to Wasps. Isn't he just what we need/want?

I was thinking the same thing this morning. I would love to have him in the squad.

Why? We don't really need another 13 or wing.

I think we could really do with a 13 - with only really have Paulo and Sam, one has started 10 games at 13 and the other 12 and has a history of serious injuries. Last year even with Fekitoa and Booj able to cover we had to get McHenry in and play Josh at 13. In my opinion it is where we are weakest in terms of depth.

Moot anyway as he has gone to Newcastle but his leaving Tigers was announced I thought he'd be exactly what we need.

Odendaal can also play 13, can't he?

I thought this a while ago when he was first rumoured to be leaving.
A classy operator at 13 and extremely organised defensively but arguably a Spink type 13. With Odogwu and Burger able to play at 13 as well as Simonds and RM-W, Moroni probably doesn’t offer enough ‘something different’ or X factor to warrant the signing of a player likely to be called up for international duty again at some stage.

Yes, and no. 12 and 13 are not interchangeable, unless your name is Eddie, and he does not play anywhere near as well at 13.

This is the key issue. It's not that we have a shortage of cover at 13, it's the lack of vision in our coaches who can't see the potential of other squad members at outside centre. If Eddie Jones was our DoR he would happily pick Brad Shields, Biyi Alo, Tom Cruse or Pudsey the kit man at 13.

Not that I'd know it since if EJ became head coach I wouldn't be watching the club any longer....

They're not easily interchangeable but it can be done and frequently has done by players with the right attributes. It's a bit like being able to play 15 and on the wing. Not everyone can do it, but a lot of players can.

I’d have been happy if we’d signed a quality operator like Moroni. But I do t think he’d work in a partnership with Odendaal. If we had a playmaker at 12 he’d have been perfect. I’m surprised Leicester let him go.

All down to reduced salary cap.

Bobby Bridge reports from Leicester.

Phil Cokagnasina can play 12, 13 and 14..Tigers signed him from Irish and he looks a good acquisition, let's them drop Moroni.
Intelligent recruitment..it's possible.

We also have Rekeiti Ma’asi-White, who has just been called up to England under 20 team.
