Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Commonwealth 7s - Pitch
« on: August 13, 2022, 10:12:12 AM »
I see on Twitter that CCFC have been forced to postpone the scheduled fixture at the CBSA on Tuesday against Wigan.

The independent agronomist has found the pitch to still be unplayable, apparently. Far cry from the old "jumpers for goalposts" days, eh?

Now, this is outside of the CG exclusivity, and some CCFC fans are (understandably) upset about the postponement, and there are more anti-Wasps cries.

My question to the CCFC fans is this: would you rather a temporary delay to home fixtures at the start of the season, folllowed by completion of the rest at home in Coventry, OR would you prefer to fulfil all scheduled fixtures at "home" in Northampton or Birmingham?

My suspicion is the former, but there is some serious myopia happening.

The “statement” is very narrow and excludes only administration. It does not exclude a CVA which is a different process. He does not say the business is solid - annual losses, failure to pay the bond including failing to attract alternative financing and seeking public funds in the form of a £13 grant would suggest otherwise. Bondholders in general do not feel that there has been transparency.

I know I shouldn't bite, but...

Are you a bond holder? I'm genuinely intrigued by what skin you have in the game.

If not, and I'm guessing not, then I do wonder why you keep trotting out the same lines over and over.

The attitude of some Sky Blues fans (and this isn't necessarily directed at you, SBSam) amazes me. Surely the best case scenario for everyone is for Wasps to do well, which means CCFC do well with a well appointed home in Coventry, and both clubs succeed financially. I said in a previous post that I'm bewildered by the acceptance of SISU by the vocal portion of City fans these days - they're the true bin-fire. Nothing good for City has come from their ownership, other than the last minute stay of execution of administration. SISU have contributed nothing, taken everything, and dragged the club around the Midlands.

I'm a Sky Blue, and a Black & Gold (and a Cov Rugby fan to boot), and I want everyone connected with the City to do well. Why people would wish failure on a club - particuarly one which has taken on the financial management of the Arena (which is, and has always been beyond CCFC) and brought CCFC back to Coventry - is beyond me.

Okay, I bit. Now jog on.

Biyi is indeed looking in beast mode. With him, Koch and Ryan there is some proper scary depth on that right side of the scrum.

Still think we're light in the engine room, especilly with Elliot being out for a while yet.

We shall see.

Woodward was a cracking player a few seasons ago. Unfortunaltely for him (and Gloucester) his body just broke and he was perma-injured.

Very good point that Miller would offer more than Woodward - I agree. Wouldn't be an upgrade, and that's what you have to be looking at every time.

Short and to the point from Derek.

The club is solid, there are no plans for CVAs or other financial implements.

No-one can see the future, but projections and forecasts can be made. All this nonsense about crystal balls and so on is just nonsense. The spculation can end, Wasps will be buzzing around (and annoying some people) for the foreseeable.

More than he had to say, but typically for Derek, exactly what was required.

Unfortunately, with the cashflow where it seems to be, we can't even indulge in relentless transfer speculation....

One for another thread, perhaps, but I think the squad is a little light in some areas, plus a certain Mike Brown seems to still be available to add experience to a young back line...

I'll get my coat

Might as well chip in on this one as well now I've registered...

I can't see how Wasps have done anything wrong at all in this scenario. Yes, it isn't ideal, and the loss of revenue from the fan footfall in the stadium is probably at the wrong time, but:

* Wasps own the arena
* Wasps agreed the contract with the CG while CCFC were absent
* Wasps informed CCFC of the change of plan re: re-laying the pitch earlier in the year

Pretty sure all of those are inarguable. I don't know the ins-and-outs of the EFL scheduling, but I assume that CCFC will have petitioned them for a run of away games until post-Aug 14th (when the exclusivity for the CG expires). Why this would not have been granted is beyond me - there is precedent, given the Premier League did just this for Tottenham when they were moving home.

As I said, not ideal, but the spin being churned out by SISU and repeated ad nauseam by a small (but vocal) number of CCFC fans is purely designed to further their own agenda.

For the record, I'm a lifelong Sky Blues fan. SISU was, and remains, the worst thing to have happened to the club in my lifetime. Some fans seem to have short memories as far as they are concerned.

Afternoon all. Long time lurker, first time poster. Be gentle...

Largely in agreement with the school of thought that, while there are rumours and discussions about the finances, the underlying business has to be sound. Let's not forget that a lot of the income streams were predicated on multiple large scale concerts through the close-season, along with events and conferences in the arena facilities.

That all got Covid-ed.

With a return to normality there will no doubt be work happening to attract acts to the CBSA next Summer. As proved this Summer with Rammstein, the facilities are there for big shows, and having a list of acts previously hosted including Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Spice Girls et al can't hurt. Additionally conferences and events will be being arranged and the facilities booked.

None of this helps with immediate cashflow, but taking a step back and looking at the macro picture it doesn't look too gloomy. The season starting, bums on seats - for both the football and rugby clubs - will kickstart the cashflow and hopefully unstick whatever levers are required.

You can't take the bond issue in isolation. Yes, targets weren't hit and options are no doubt being investigated and may well not be where they should be - but being realistic - Covid messed up the finances of so many businesses that one can hardly consider Wasps an outlier. Bondholders will accept the delay, because its the only way they'll see a return on their investment.

So, overall I'm optimistic that we'll have a club to support and faith that the relevant people are doing their jobs while we all chinwag about what we think they should be doing.

I promise all my posts won't be this serious.
