What have Bath's results looked like recently? Starting XV looks solid, but the bench looks like it's made to really cause a mess when it arrives.

according to Wikipedia, Jones still has the best win ratio at 77% of any England coach.
Sir Clive is on 71%

And we beat the current world champions just a few months ago, but people tend to gloss over the victories as though England are entitled to them.

Would have liked to have seen Leal reffing it.

George is definitely good enough to be on as a hooker permanently but which non hooker are you taking off permanently?
Don't think anyone read my earlier post where I suggested Simmonds could have been removed permanently for George to come on and take the lineout throw. Dombrandt could have then come on at 8 after the sin bin was over.

As good as George is, he's not going to be as busy around the pitch as Simmonds. And during a period of 14 players, you want your most agile on the pitch.

Marler didn't really screw it up, Dombrandt did. He ran within the 5m, if he'd stayed back, it would have been fine.

Agree with the over-riding sentiment of the piece, but to hold Jones accountable for LCD's brain fart is perhaps stretching a point!

Also it was LCD who messed up not Jamie George
I think he was making the point that Jamie George should have been bought on as soon as LCD was yellow carded rather than the usual practice which is to wait for the next scrum. They could also have bought George on prior to the line out, the error was unquestionably allowing Marler to take the throw, that has to be the coaching staff's (i.e. Eddie jones) responsibility.

You would hope that an international team would be coached on how to deal with unusual circumstances like how to deal with being isolated facing a cross field kick. I'm not convinced that trying to catch the ball was the best option (although definitely better than deliberately knocking it into touch) It's too risky, spill the ball and the opposition winger picks it up and scores. catch it and go to ground and you run the risk of the winger winning a penalty for not releasing. Surely, as you are running across the pitch at pace, having noticed the advancing winger (which LCD definitely did) you allow him to go for the ball and time your run to clatter him. Good chance of him spilling the ball and you win a scrum or you drive him into touch and get the line out. Definitely lower risk. Would an International team not discuss these options in such a scenario? TCUP as Woodward used to preach. Noticeably absent from everyone in the England camp, players and coaches.

This journalist is a golf journalist first of all, not a rugby guy.

Next, when do you ever see the hooker replaced immediately? You don't. I'm 99% sure if you make the sub then, it's a permanent substitution, whoever goes off has to stay off, rather than doing it for a scrum, when you can bring the player back on.

Yes you're correct. But surely Jamie George is good enough to be a permanent replacement and avoid the fiasco of Marler throwing in?

I don't know a lot about rugby defense but why was it LCD who was there in the first place?
I find it a bit unfair to pile on LCD, yes in an ideal world he'd have caught it, but he's a hooker and it isn't instinctive. If it had been a back he'd have caught it and been down the pitch before anyone else got moving. Even a 2nd rower or No8 would have made a good attempt at catching it.   But then again, the cross field kick only happened because LCD was out there on his own.

He'd leapt up and had 2 hands on the ball. Any sort of attempted catch and fumble would have been far better than deliberately volleyball smacking it out into touch.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Bugger - Launch recalled by Eddie
« on: February 08, 2022, 12:58:25 PM »
Just because he's called him up doesn't mean he's going to hand him 80 minutes against Italy.

And Launch has now played 2 games, and whilst his gametime has been managed, he's looked bloody good in both of them and doesn't appear to have lost any of his ability. I'd have Launch 2nd only to Itoje in the England 2nd row stocks, and he pairs extremely well as he offers more ballast than probably any other option we have.

Can't we be happy about having such an extraordinary player that he gets back into England contention so easily?

I feel Umaga is still the better decision maker in terms of taking it to the line and giving the pass to the best option. However Atkinson feels that little more reliable, perhaps because he's not pushing it quite to the edge as much. If we can get both of them on the pitch, I'd be happy.

Think we should be thanking Barnes for not wanting to call it a little earlier, saw plenty of rucks that could have easily gone against us in the final 10 minutes (75-85). I wouldn't say he wanted us in the game, but he could have easily, and legitimately, killed us off as such. Another ref would have changed the landscape a lot.

I thought Exeter were allowed too many penalties in their 22 without a warning so the referee decisions even out

Completely far too many.

Well it only sort of evens out if you don't say that one or two of them should have been penalties to Exeter :D. Felt like the next pen would have been the warning, it didn't feel like the card was coming to me. Especially given how close those penalties were to being against us. Still feel we were very fortunate that every one of those decisions went our way.

Having watched the game now, I thought Barbeary looked a little off the pace in defence (as did a couple of others), but his attack was as strong as always. It's just that exeter made sure they had 3 men on him every time, which is great because it makes more room for us elsewhere.

Is that our most powerful pack, even if everyone was fit?

I thought Martinez was seriously injured last week - how's he on the bench?

He's not on the bench?

Think Alfie on the bench to have fun for 25-30 minutes will be fun.

Anyone know what's wrong with Tom Willis? He'd be nice to have back!

I'm curious as to WonkyWasp's total. He's doing quite well!

She, and I cheated.

I know you cheated to get your numbers, I'm just wondering how WonkyWasp got her numbers?

:P
