https://www.wasps.co.uk/news/wasps-team-to-face-london-irish-on-saturday/

Lee Blackett has named his Wasps side to host London Irish at Ricoh Arena in Gallagher Premiership Round 11 on Saturday.

There are seven changes to the starting line-up from the game against Leicester Tigers last time out.

Will Porter and Jacob Umaga return to form the half-back partnership.

There are two changes in the midfield, as Michael Le Bourgeois starts at 12 and Juan de Jongh comes in for the injured Malakai Fekitoa at outside centre.

Fresh from re-signing with the club this week, Tom Cruse starts at hooker. He is joined in the front row by Tom West and Jeff Toomaga-Allen, in the absence of Kieran Brookes.

There is also one change to the back row, where Gabriel Oghre is back to start at seven, alongside captain Brad Shields and Tom Willis.

Will Rowlands has returned from Six Nations duty with Wales, so he starts again in the second row alongside James Gaskell.

New loan signing from Ospreys, Nicky Thomas is in line to make his Wasps debut from amongst the replacements.

Paolo Odogwu and Dan Robson are still away with England for their Six Nations campaign.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Oghre Covid Breach
« on: February 11, 2021, 07:18:56 PM »
https://www.wasps.co.uk/news/club-statement-covid-19-regulations-breach/

Wasps are aware of a breach of Covid-19 regulations by one of our players, Gabriel Oghre. The club were extremely disappointed to learn of this incident, particularly as we regularly remind all players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibility to set an example by adhering to them.

A club investigation has already taken place and this matter has been dealt with internally.

Disappointing. Anyone know what's gone on?

Update: banned for 3 weeks for households mixing.

Jonathan Joseph banned for 2 weeks and Elliot Stooke for 3 also.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Another Pirate
« on: February 10, 2021, 12:01:15 PM »
https://www.wasps.co.uk/news/wasps-announce-the-signing-of-alex-schwarz-on-a-short-term-loan-deal/

Wasps are delighted to confirm the signing of Cornish Pirates scrum-half Alex Schwarz on a short-term loan deal.

With a couple of scrum-halves away on international duty and ruled out with injury, the former Wales Under 18 representative will provide much needed cover.

The 27-year-old joined Pirates in 2018 from RGC – Rygbi Gogledd Cymru – who compete in Wales’ Principality Premiership.

Schwarz has also played for Italian Top 12 side Rugby Colorno and represented Scarlets Premiership Select in the British & Irish Cup.

Lee Blackett, Wasps Head Coach, said: “With Dan Robson and Will Porter unavailable to us, we needed to bring in some more cover at scrum-half.

“Alex is an experienced player, who will add a lot to our young scrum-half group for the next month or so. We look forward to welcoming him to the club.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to Alan Paver, Gavin Cattle and everyone at Cornish Pirates for the allowing us to take a number of their players on loan over the past few weeks.

“It is obvious from how easily their loan players have adapted to our setup, that they are a very well-coached club.”

Wasps fly-half Jacob Umaga has deactivated Instagram after coming under fire for his recent performances.
CoventryLive understands the 22-year-old removed himself from the social media platform after fellow users took advantage of its direct messaging feature to share their thoughts via his inbox.
Umaga was recently selected in England's shadow squad for the Six Nations, meaning he remains with his club and is on standby if Eddie Jones requires his services.
In the first match following the squad announcement, Wasps fell to their heaviest home league defeat in nine years going down 49-17 to Harlequins at the Ricoh Arena.
Umaga was by no means alone in performing below par but his eight turnovers of possession during the match were key to Wasps struggling to exert any kind of control on the match.
The former Kenilworth RFC junior player is understood to have deactivated his Instagram following that match and his account remains unavailable.
Wasps head coach Lee Blackett revealed he spoke to Umaga in the week that followed the game and that Umaga was frustrated with his performance.
Blackett said: “He’s one of those players you just trust so much. He does have the ability to make mistakes, but he always seems to find a way to come up with an X-factor moment or a big moment. We forget how young he is. He’s got massive potential, and he’s nowhere near his best. He’s got so much further to grow as a player and we’re excited to see how much he can grow.”
Teenager Charlie Atkinson, also named as an England shadow squad member, started at fly-half against Northampton Saints last weekend.
Umaga arrived from the bench in place of fullback Rob Miller with 23 minutes to go and showed some encouraging signs with ball in hand as Wasps attempted to overhaul a 22-point half-time deficit.

But his afternoon will be remembered for a forward pass to Zach Kibirige when well placed as well as a missed kick to touch from a promising penalty position.
The following day and also faced with a five-point deficit, Ireland fullback Billy Burns suffered a similar moment of misfortune as his penalty kick to touch sailed into the ingoal area as Wales sealed a 21-16 victory.
It led to the Ulster fly-half receiving a barrage of abuse on social media, including some users tagging him in on Twitter and urging him to retire. It prompted  the Ireland international to deactivate his Twitter account.
CoventryLive rugby writer Bobby Bridge
"Social media is great for sports fans as it provides a level of interaction with their heroes which just didn't exist before. But this is the other side of it. Young players especially grew up with social media in their lives so these kinds of messages will be seen at a time when they already have the weight of the world on their shoulders.
"I've had to write critical things about Jacob for his recent performances, that is part and parcel of the job. It wasn't so long ago I, and many others, were lavishing praise upon him for his dazzling displays en route to Twickenham last year - where he scored a memorable try in the final. He's a special talent who has had a dip in form.
"But targeting the individuals by 'calling them out' on Twitter or messaging them directly on Instagram really beggars belief. Nobody will be feeling the recent dip in form more keenly than Jacob.
"The guy eats, sleeps and breathes rugby and for a 22-year-old, he's already given so much back to the sport. On the day of his first England call-up, the biggest moment of his career, that night he was out on a cold Coventry night coaching the city's women's university team. In non Covid-times he also coaches at grassroots men's club Aston Old Edwardians RFC. He is also prominent with Wasps' latest community initiative, Project Rugby at Home, which is helping young people to stay engaged with sport.
"Having an opinion and sharing it is one thing, but directly targeting a player is another. People must be kinder and think things through before they go directly seeking out sportsmen like Jacob or Billy, who will already be feeling things deeply, without the added abuse and criticism coming directly their way online via social media."

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Tim Cardall signs new deal with Wasps
« on: February 01, 2021, 12:09:02 PM »
Some good news: Tim Cardall signs new deal with Wasps

Wasps are delighted to announce that lock Tim Cardall has extended his contract with the club.

The 24-year-old has made 25 appearances for Wasps since joining Wasps’ Senior Academy for the 2018/19 season from Nottingham Rugby.

Cardall impressed playing every minute in all ten of Wasps A’s 2018/19 Premiership Rugby Shield games, scoring two tries. That fine form saw Cardall promoted to the first-team squad for 2019/20.

Last season the powerful second-row appeared 16 times in Black and Gold, including impressive performances in the Gallagher Premiership away wins at Saracens and Worcester Warriors.

He has also won England Students honours and in 2017/18 regularly guested for Wasps in the A League and Anglo-Welsh Cup, before joining the club permanently.

Wasps Head Coach Lee Blackett said: “We are thrilled that Tim has agreed a new contract with us.

“Tim has been a vital member of the strong group of locks at the club, as well as being a very popular member of the squad.

"He has had a really good last 12 months and shown a great appetite to learn over the last few seasons. We are all looking forward to working with him further in the coming years.”

Cardall added: “I am delighted to have extended my contract at Wasps.

“It was an easy decision for me to commit my future here, we have a really good group of players and staff and I’m excited to continue working with them.

“I’m really enjoying my time at the club and I have loved getting the opportunities to play recently.

“As a club we have a really good environment and I’m very excited about being part of the clubs future, as I feel I have a lot more to give.”

Will Rowlands to leave Wasps at the end of the season

Wasps can today confirm that lock Will Rowlands will be leaving the club at the end of the current season, to join Welsh Pro 14 side Dragons.

Wasps Head Coach Lee Blackett said: “Whilst we are obviously disappointed to see Will leave, we fully understand his reasons for needing to play in Wales.

“Will has and always will be highly respected by everyone at the club, on and off the field.

“He has been a great servant to Wasps, and everyone here wishes him all the best for the future. We look forward to seeing him play many more times for Wales.”

Rowlands added: "I feel very fortunate to have been able to play for this great club.

“I cannot thank everyone enough who has been involved with Wasps over the last seven years for all the support, guidance and motivation they have provided me on my journey to becoming a better player.

“I will be forever grateful to have been a part of this special group of people.

“Unfortunately, change is inevitable, and I am beginning a new chapter in my career. However, I will be cherishing the rest of this season at Wasps and looking forward to making a few more priceless memories."

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Willis, Rosbon, Umaga, Barbeary

Being reported by the Daily Mail that they're all set to be called into the EPS.

Eddie Jones is set to snub Bath scrum-half Ben Spencer from his autumn England squad, but Worcester Warriors wrecking-ball centre Ollie Lawrence is expected to be included on Thursday.

The national coach will update his party with players from Bath, Worcester and Sale Sharks before a weekend training camp building up to the Barbarians fixture on October 25.

And Sportsmail understands despite his superb form for Bath, scrum-half Spencer will be left out along with wing Joe Cokanasiga.

The 22-year-old Fijian-born flyer has only just returned from almost a year out injured, and it is believed Jones wants him to recover fully before he returns to the England fold.

With Manu Tuilagi out until next year having torn his achilles, England are on the look-out for a big centre to replace him.

Sources have indicated that 15st 10lbs Lawrence, 21, is earmarked as that man and will be added to the squad.

After the Premiership final on October 24, Jones will complete his squad with the addition of those from Exeter Chiefs and Wasps.

It is believed that league sensation Jack Willis, 23, will be selected at that point, capping a remarkable season in which he has won 44 turnovers in the league - 25 more than anyone else.

On Wednesday night the Wasps flanker was recognised by his peers when named Rugby Players' Association Players' Player of the Year.

Willis said on that accolade: 'It's an incredible honour to win this award and for it to be voted by all the players and teams that I've played against, and my peers, makes it even more special.'

Willis looks likely to be joined in the England squad after the final by fellow Wasps starlet Alfie Barbeary, the 20-year-old hooker who also plays back-row, scrum-half Dan Robson - who benefits from Spencer's absence - and fly-half Jacob Umaga.

Barbeary is tipped for greatness and scored a hat-trick against Leicester last month.

Exeter brothers Joe and Sam Simmonds may well miss out despite leading the Chiefs to both the European and Premiership finals.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / 7 Positive COVID tests

Wasps can confirm that seven members of the playing department, three staff members and four players, have returned positive tests for COVID-19.

The Club’s medical team were informed of the test results following the latest round of the PCR COVID-19 screening programme.

All seven, who are in good health overall, are now self-isolating and so are their close contacts. They will continue to follow Public Health England and Premiership Rugby guidelines and protocols. The Club have taken the decision to cancel training for the remainder of this week as an added precautionary measure.

Everyone at Wasps send their best wishes to the players and staff concerned.

The Club’s COVID-19 contact tracing, measures and protocols, which remain rigorous, will continue to be adhered to.
