Shocking game. Jacob earned a space on the bench for the next game IMO, as did Harris. I never got the impression that we really wanted to win, Sale just seemed to want the win more.

As for CMK. Send him back to school. Prefer JP Doyle to him...

Horrific performance.
Played exactly the way Sale would have wanted.
They did nothing apart from not give away pens. Did we just think we could turn up and win? No intensity.
Yes some of the pens were nonsense but at least 75% were idiotic mistakes.
Take the line out rather than tap and go PLEASE!
Hope the wheels don’t come off now- JTA went back to his form pre lockdown.

A rather large reality check.

We lost out in the physicality stakes. On the back foot for too long. Play like we did tonight against Bath, Bistol , Sarries and Exeter and the gloss of the previous 5 games will be a distant memory.

Their starting loosie had a huge game, mashed JTA and Owlett and we only started making headway once he was replaced.

Lesson for Umaga and Blackett today. We can't try and play our all court game in that kind of weather. Horses for courses. Also highlights we miss a heavy duty runner in the backs like Van Rensberg.

Shoutout for Launch who singlehandedly terrorised their maul.

Probably the result we needed to avoid any complacency going forwards.....but that the team just couldn't adapt to conditions and play a smart game of territory and all of the on field leaders didn't, was a real concern

Surely the Capt has to talk to the ref about issues? Offside was a painful joke at times and if it going to be a problem at the breakdown, kick and chase with the fast back three and keep it simple....

The ref didn't appear to know the Laws around the scrum and ruck, and was making it up, we were under pressure in the scrum, but two pens awarded against were clearly the other way - but even so - surely professionals can adapt?

Lets just hope that was a one off and the coaching team have "words".....

Well that was utter frustration. A perfect storm of terrible discipline, sloppy mistakes and an opposition who just wanted it more. Don't like mentioning the refs but CMK was just abysmal. Sale were offside so much and it was the most awful display of pre-conceived scrum decisions. Umaga's focus just wasn't there. But, all that said, it's a simple equation - you give away that many pens you don't win. Positives I thought were Willis again and Vellacott when he came out. The kick for the bonus point summed it up. Still, on we go - just one of those games.

CMK was being told in his earpiece as the missed conversion was sailing by, that Sale had committed two no arms tackles in the previous period of play.

What’s the correct protocol there?
What should a referee do with that knowledge?

I wouldn’t come down hard on Jacob just yet.
He’s won us more games than he’s lost em.

It’s also a very different challenge playing in front of the England manager who has put faith in you already.
He tried too hard to impact the game in the way he would in dry conditions.

That’s a learning lesson.
He’ll come back stronger.

But having Eddie in the stands will have undoubtedly changed his mindset a bit.

Question - is it my imagination but are the much lauded changes in the rules being dissipated each round. The referees seem to be reverting to previous actions.
Also I thought there was an instruction to refs that scrums shouldn't be used to gain penalties.

It was also pretty annoying that as we took the quick tap at the end, one of the Sale players was already the best part of 2m off of the line and then rather than checking himself and not getting involved he flew straight in for the tackle, CMK held an arm out for the offside but surely that's a clear pen there and then.  Definitely clutching at straws a bit, but at 76 mins there's the possibility for a second try to get close to levelling the game.  At nearly 79, there isn't.

It's been said already, but lots of handling errors thanks to sloppy ball, some clever frustration tactics from Sale on top of their outright physicality and CMK because of it given them the benefit of the doubt when it came to the more marginal calls.

I'm not sure it was our tactics, or selection that were the issue.  Just the execution, Umaga in particular had a high number of handling errors.  He's young though, not every game will be sublime for him and I hope he doesn't come out of this with a real low and instead learns from it.

Dimes nailed it in his interview; he'd prepped them well.  They chose not to play rugby in the first half, trusted their defence and were hungry.

It's a result that really stings (boom boom).
