Sale Sharks Rugby Club can today announce that Steve Diamond has left the club with immediate effect due to personal reasons.

The club would like to thank Steve for his loyal service and commitment over the years. He leaves Sale Sharks in a strong position having improved the club in many ways and we wish him every success for the future.

Paul Deacon will assume responsibility of the first team as Head Coach while we take stock and plan for the future.

Commenting on the announcement, Steve said:

“After 10 proud years with Sale Sharks I have taken the decision to step away from the business.

I feel that this is the perfect moment to hand over to someone else, given the club is now stable and in a great position to compete at the highest level.

We have acquired a world class training facility, built an academy that is the envy of many premiership clubs and constructed a squad that can win tournaments and trophies at domestic and European level.

I know Simon and Ged will continue with the progress we have made together, and I now look forward to taking some time out and planning my next challenge.”

Whilst can be somewhat acerbic and direct, he would be missed from the game.

So is this leaving for personal reasons and he needs a break from the game or personal reasons that mean he will end up elsewhere on more money.

Like him of loathe him it’s a big loss for Sale and a real character gone from the Premiership.

He's an owner and on the board at Sale so I am assuming he's taking the time for himself.

I can't see how that move would make any sense at all?

For the most recent years he's fought tooth-and-nail with a squad ran on a shoestring budget that has often punched above its weight.  He finally gets a full salary cap to play with and a squad who can compete at the top and suddenly jumps ship a few games into the season? - and that ignores him being a Shareholder/Board Member.

I hadn't realised his Mother had passed away recently.  That's tremendously sad.

He's a huge character and the Premiership is poorer without him.  I've enjoyed watching Dimes beam after a hard-fought win as much as I've enjoyed watching him implode (and occasionally try not to!).  Most of all, I've admired him being his own man, giving us a real perspective on his views and not playing up to some of the PR guff that we get fed from other DoRs and players.

I can't say I will miss him at all, his consistent berating of officials on live TV was dragging the ethos of Rugby ettiquette down to levels only seen in Association Football.

Which must make us akin to Football Fans as there are weekly complaints about Refereeing decisions on most forums! Dimes speaks his mind, he doesn't always get it right but he's not swayed by worrying too much about what others might think

His departure comes just a month after Sale appointed new CEO Sid Sutton, who was tasked with commercial activities and enhancing the working culture.

Could that be a significant factor?

Got a similar feel to Dai leaving. Smells of negotiated settlement with NDA's. Oddly, I liked him for not trying to be likable.

Good point . Hadn’t thought of. Perhaps thought he was being undermined.
