Champions or Challenge Cup?
« on: May 09, 2021, 06:03:58 PM »
At first glance, Champions cup...It has the bigger games, likely the bigger crowds and the bigger income.

However on second passing is our coaching and playing team at a point in their development where going into the Challenge Cup and pushing hard to win would be more beneficial? First thoughts that spring to mind is the Bears....won the thing last year, monkey off back with silverwear secured, a title gained and confidence and memories forged both with the team and also the fans. Also think Parker pen champions 2002/3 and where that led us?

perhaps champions of the challenge could be far better.

Club will want Champions but think we will be in the Challenge. We have to overtake Bath because if Tigers win the Challenge this year they go into the big cup.

Personally if we can travel give me the new places of the Challenge - more fun.

Definitely, definitely Champions Cup. You've simply got to aim high. We were one play (or decision) from beating Clermont a few short weeks ago. We need to aspire to compete at the top table.

If we do end up in the Challenge Cup, I really hope we make winning it our top priority, rather than using it as a development tool like Dai did in 2019/20. Winning the Challenge Cup in 2003 really Kickstarted our golden era and the confidence of winning a trophy will do this squad wonders.

Unless you draw an Irish side with significant travelling / ex pat support do you think attendance between the 2 competitions would be that massively different in the group stages, probably more linked to week in week out results?

We are miles off even making a dent in the Champions Cup. We'd be better having a few easy weeks to allow for rest and rotation, especially given that our squad is short on numbers and quality  depth

Plus one. We also will learn more in low pressure shot to nothing matches like we had weeks ago. Play against the best with no.pressure, and who knows,we might be in a better position next year.

Bryan Clough put out a strong team and subsequently won the Anglo Scottish Cup in 1977. When asked why he said that the players would remember the feeling of winning and want to do it again.  And as the only Notts County fan in the village, the subsequently made my life a misery ever since with their league win, League Cup wins and those 2 European Cup wins (which for some reason their fans seem to think should have given them an invite to the ESL Money Trough).  If we end in the Challenge Cup then this is what we should do...I bet Leicester will  benefit next season if they win it this year.

Leicester will benefit immediately if they win - straight into the Champions Cup - at the possible expense of a club within the 8 if they are below 8th!

Did you watch the Clermont match, but for an incorrect ref decision we should have won it?

Given that Leicester are currently 8th, then if we scrape into the top 8, it is most likely to be at their expense, so realistically we would have to overhaul Bath and/or Irish to qualify.

If Leicester with the Cup, that is.  They appear to be targeting it, and why not?  No relegation threat, and gets them into the Champions' Cup for next year, so league position becomes irrelevant.

Looking at our last 4 games, they are all winable. Get mindsets in the right place and there is no reason why should not have a fair chance. Could be a very tasty last game of the season!

But we didn't win did we? And it wasn't an incorrect ref decision that led us to go from their 22 to defending our try line within two minutes at the end of the game.
