Gaskell really wound someone up doing this last season. Didn’t go down well at all

Seen a few others try it too. Clearly referees don’t like the facts presented to them that they’re not enforcing the laws

The issue was probably more that Smailes got confused once he got past 2.  Wasn't he the ref that was pinging, probably Gaskell, time and again? Then Gaskell (?) came out after half time with a different scrum cap on and the pinging stopped!

The refs can silence the players but not the crowd. Simple way to solve this is for the crowd to call out the countdown (obviously only when the oppo have the ball)

I think World Rugby need to change the rules so that the ref has to call 'Ball is out' as soon as the 5 seconds is up.

Genius. I wouldn't expect referees to take much notice but it would definitely put extra pressure on the 9 to actually use the ball when he's supposed to.

I have seen a couple of refs telling opposition to stop counting. Not entirely sure on why someone can't count down the 5 seconds?
Any refs on here that can confirm the legal footing for stopping it?

I was watching, I think the Bristol game, but could be wrong, where the ref penalised the 9 for taking too long. even the commentary team were amazed, don't think I've ever seen it before.

I've seen Luke Pearce give a penalty but he hasn't done so for a while

I have seen refs warn the 9, threaten to give a free kick, but bottle it and not do so despite persistent infringements.

They would only need to penalise a few times across the games to effect a complete change.

The vast majority of times the ball is away within 5 seconds of the ref calling use it.
