Billy Searle, out for the remainder of this season

"He's having an operation next Monday. It was a full dislocation of the ankle and fracture as well. So he definitely needs an operation to put it right.

"I haven't got the time scales yet, we'll know a bit more after the operation. But I think it's safe to say we're looking at anywhere between five to nine months.

It was fine when I left it.....

Damn shame for him, it was undoubtedly his best performance for us so far.

Fingers crossed it goes well. 5 months feels like a very long time for an ankle injury, however serious.

Dislocation means ligaments involved and once they’re damaged it goes from weeks to months

Not necessarily.  Just means the joint surfaces were out of place, it's fairly common with ankles to get a fracture dislocation where the bits of bone that hold it together break off.  They're pretty serious injuries, but 20+ weeks is seriously extreme.

Not wanting to be doom and gloom, but this sounds like Sam Jones' injury. Hope he can fix well. Dammit. What a season.

Based on what they have said it isn't as severe as Sam's, but they haven't given us any details.  And even if it isn't they have been known to be career ending.

Fingers crossed...

I broke my fibula and (i can't remember the exact terminology) had some kind of fracture dislocation of my ankle where the socket was no longer in one piece.
It required plate and screws, and it was over 2 months before I could bear full weight on it.

Obviously, my recovery rate is going to be hugely different to a professional athlete with dedicated care and rehab, but it took me a lot longer than 5 months before I was playing again.

Exactly the injury that ended my rugby playing days.  Hope the quacks do more for Billy than they did for me.

Only the docs will know for sure how bad this is, but, based on the estimated time out, it would appear bad. I do hope this is not career ending for him. A chance for Umaga to step up though. I know Miller will be covering 10 for now, even though Umaga is back with us. What will Dai do? 10 is a key position to know you can't fill for that long.

I did my ankle on 29 October. Plate & couple of screws on 1  November. 6 weeks with no weight on left foot. Now down to just one stick and expect to lose that in 10 days. Left calf and foot still swollen - that will the state for another couple of months. Private physio, exercises and walking has made a big difference for me. Walked 11 kms on day of Bristol match between pubs and stadium.
Searle will have a lot of help & I’m three times his age.  But still sounds the end of the season for him.
