Something to beware of when playing Edinburgh
« on: December 03, 2019, 07:46:02 PM »
At last weekend's match they lifted the post-protection to make it more difficult for Munster to score against base of the padding.

Dangerous, ungentlemanly conduct that altered the pitch - must have been something they could have been punished for.

Is there a law that even covers it though?

Why aren't 'Y' shaped posts (as in American Football) used? Would remove this issue completely.

Believe they've received a warning about it. Very dangerous play.

The rule needs to be changed. Posts used to take up the space of the white try line so effectively the bottom of the post became the line. The new fangled padding now extends that out from the line. What if the padding was 4ft thick.. would the current rule still apply?

The corner flag parameter was changed some time ago (i.e. if you dived into the corner .. possibly mid air but touched the corner flag it was deemed "in touch") so I can't see why the authorities can't change the rule about the base of the post

Rule states padding can not protrude more than 0.3m out from the post in any direction.

I'd suggest simply using posts like the american football ones, where the pole is further back from the line. Keep the law for those using the normal poles as they are now, but as people slowly replace their poles, then it'll filter down.

It's a law that isn't broke and doesn't need fixing. Like most laws in Rugby someone likes to bend it but this particular one isn't difficult to manage.

It's virtually impossible to defend the pad when the try line is the offside line though. I'd like to see it removed as an issue if possible.

Everyone says you can't defend it but how few trys are scored against the bottom of the post?

Lots of penalties given away as players go off side trying to defend it though.
