I've always enjoyed watching players where jeopardy is part of the "deal". In many ways it was part of why I found the England of '03 vintage only came to life once Jason R was being selected - and you couldn't get more different from Danny.....Jason was both mercurial and a really hard worker and a "real" team man too
What rarely happened with Danny, was a coach getting that balance between discipline and team focus and the facilitation of genius. In Danny's case, it may not have been possible - it may just have been an impossible "bargain" for this particular player. And I do wonder if anyone has talked to him in those terms. I'm sure Ian M did when making him FB for the Euro final
I'll admit, looking back on what serves as my career......that my low points all coincided with my own poor judgement that it was more important for me to "be right" than to agree what was right for my team. And visa versa, the best bits were when my manager got me to buy into what the team required - but made it feel like it was my decision......(to precis rather!) And I'm a lot easier to deal with (I'm sure) than Danny.
So - yes - a bit of a waste of what could have been - but Cips himself is as much to "blame" as anyone else or any situation. But it may well have been that there wasn't a solution that anyone could get Cips to buy into?
