Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Rugbypass take on Guardian article
« on: April 18, 2023, 08:44:25 PM »
The article was a bit nothing-y for those of us who frequent wasps message boards, but probably did raise valid points for those who don't and who may red articles on rugbypass.

Despite that, the real question is, would you take 5-10 years of Wasps followed by a possible complete failure, or would you rather there was no wasps at all?

That's ultimately the situation we were in previously.
Was an extra 8 years of a Wasps team existing worth it?

If it wasn't, then it isn't now either
If it was ok then, then there's an argument that it's worth the risk now...... After all, it's none of us taking the risk

The tweet that Pudsey replied to has been deleted.
Not sure if that was an official tweet though

From the Sixways Forum -

- Wasps will support the Foundation and provide players to play for WW

I'll settle for us having some players of our own.

Seriously though, while it may be the best solution, it still feels a bit shitty

Were bond returns paid out as dividends?
If so what percentage of the original amount have bond holders been paid out to date?

I'm still wondering if those rumours about Cipriani carry any weight.

If Simmo hadn't retired from pro rugby, he'd be a great option too.

Other than that, I suspect the closest week 3 get to ex-wasps players will be academy players who haven't picked up a senior contract yet

I started supporting Wasps about 20 years ago.
Living in East London/Essex at the time, I supported them despite them being in high Wycombe, not because of it.

I then moved to Norwich, to buy continued as a season ticket holder at Adams park.
When the move to Coventry happened, I followed. Again, not because of the Ricoh, but despite it.

The stadium and the location has been irrelevant to me throughout the time I've followed the club.

I've also never met any of the owners, except Derek.
As such, I don't see the club owner as my reason for supporting them.

I've seen us win things, and I've seen us lose lots of games and play terribly, but my support for them had never wavered.

Players come and go, coaches come and go.
I don't know what it is that I'm attached to, and I have no idea if any new Wasps club would feel the same.
It will be a case of waiting and seeing if it feels like Wasps

All professional sport is financed by sugar daddies

Even football with all the millions / billions spent each year is only possible due to mega rich owners.

It really is a shame, but professional rugby has always been and will always be a loss making business.

Is that view of Saracens really that widespread?

It's obviously rife amongst us, but outside I just don't see it particularly often.

It's like it's already being forgotten

Unfortunately, as I've said before, history is written by the victors and right now, Saracens look like they'll be on that side

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Ref Abuse
« on: January 13, 2023, 01:37:45 PM »
This has been creeping in for a while. It starts on the field. There is far too much chat to referees. There is far too much instruction from refs on the field as well. If a player says something to a ref on the field march them back 10. Do it again yellow card. It will soon stop.

You get it from fans too.
I've seen it at the Ricoh and at Adams park.

Maybe there's a difference given that the fans in the stands as a sarcastic "sir" to the end of their statements, and maybe try to avoid swearing.
However the days of the ref being the sole arbiter and his decisions being being reproach are so long gone that I can barely remember them

Ultimately, the authorities have deemed (rightly or wrongly) that Saracens are now completely clean and that any previous issues were mostly clerical.

I can see an argument where that should be enough for a player.

(Please note that I still hate Saracens)

I can certainly see a scenario where Wray tells the players that investing in their businesses is totally above board and has been agreed with the salary cap manager.

In fact, I believe there was agreement from the salary cap manager that Wray had indeed asked permission to do just that and was informed that it was ok.

Therefore I can see that players would be convinced that everything is fine.

The fact that the salary cap manager said that he only agreed to something similar once, and Wray then felt he had carte blanche to do whatever he wants is a slightly different matter.

Yellow card and penalty try by the looks of it.... In the 3rd minute of the game

Stade won 26-7, so keeping at 15v15 probably kept it almost competitive

It shows how much rugby has changed in 30 years.

Antagonising the opposition either physically or verbally in order to get a reaction from them used to be a regular part of the game.

The game has worked hard at cleaning up its physical side, but I'm not sure anything official has really changed regarding the verbal side.

It's like it maintains a "sticks and stones may break my bones" approach.

I'm sure that the main argument for scraping relegation had nothing to do with maybe being more competitive.

The main point was that clubs who would otherwise be in danger of being relegated would be able to take the opportunity to play their youth players in an attempt to be stronger in future seasons.

The theory being that if you're scared of relegation, you're more likely to sign overseas journeymen who might be able to make you more competitive against the other teams at the bottom

The other expected benefit was that teams at the bottom of the league would be less likely to go into their shell and post boring rugby. Instead, they could throw the ball around and try to excite fans without having to worry about losing
