Wasps Rugby Discussion / Playing and coaching staff rumours
« on: December 16, 2022, 07:53:18 PM »
Given the news today, I thought I'd start this to keep track of rumours of coding / playing staff.

I can't believe that we'll see any international level players.
Or income is going to be minimal, therefore wage bill needs to be minimal.

I think there was a rumour the other day about Cipriani playing for next season

Has there been any others?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Over the top celebrations
« on: June 20, 2022, 09:35:14 PM »

It's obviously quite a common theme here discussing the celebrations of certain teams.... Or maybe just 1 team.

Completely unrelated to rugby, I heard someone state that there had been official studies in handball which found that big celebrations for a goal have psychological benefits to the players of that team.

I've not been able to find a study referencing handball, but I have found this which is predominantly about football.

In a game of small margins, I'm sure it's these type of gains that Saracens are probably trying to tap into

Wasps Rugby Discussion / The Alfie conundrum
« on: April 16, 2022, 11:38:50 AM »

I've often said on here that I feel that Tom Willis is our best No8.
I feel that his control at the base of the scrum and pick'n go decision making is excellent.

However, it's getting harder to leave Alfie out of the team.

If we had a final to win and everyone was fully fit and available, where does Alfie fit?

I feel that for a one off important game, we need Brad Shields.
Jack is also a match winner so gets the 7 shirt.

Does Alfie start at 8 to get him on the pitch, even if he may not be the best 8 at the club?

Does anyone still feel that he's a hooker?
He certainly doesn't seem to see himself in the front row these days, and has said that he barely played there at youth level anyway.

I think they references to centre are rather tongue in cheek.

So, does Alfie start at 8 in place of Tom?

You'd have thought the RFU would want him concentrating on the job at hand, rather than having other distractions like this

Wasps Rugby Discussion / We're keeping the bookmakers busy

Earlier this month we were 100/1 to win the premiership with Betfair.

Our recent form has seen that cut to 25/1

Wasps Rugby Discussion / HIAs
« on: January 15, 2022, 05:33:18 PM »
What's the rule on HIA's?

When does a player have to go for an HIA?

If there's a head on head collision leading to a red card, shouldn't both players be assessed?

Similarly, shouldn't Alfie have been assessed following his head collision leading to their yellow?

Although not confirmed, it appears the bad press and pressure from various groups is making them change their stance

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Ball carrier with head at knee height
« on: October 16, 2021, 08:08:05 PM »

It's happening nearly all the time when there's a tap and go penalty near the try line.
The ball carrier bends over double so that their heads are at knee height.

Presumably this is done to make it harder to tackle them, however it's got to be hugely dangerous for both the ball carrier and any would-be tackler.

I'm not aware of any law that covers this, but I wonder if something similar to the head being above the hips, as is the case during scrum time would make things safer.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Referee style, too many laws, or players?
« on: October 10, 2021, 07:22:27 PM »
A few comments have been made about referees and CMK in particular, both before and after today's game..

Mostly in reference to this pedantic nature and lack of empathy with the game and players.

Is it really his fault though if he's blowing the whistle more than other refs?

There are so many laws and directives in the game. Is it really for the referee to choose which he feels like applying and when?

We often say that backchat or other forms of poor behaviour would soon be eradicated if referees punished them each time.
However, we don't want certain infringements punished every time.
We also complain that things like crooked feeds or marginal offsides are rarely blown for.

I really feel that we often have refs we like and refs we don't.
Some refs get credit for making big calls, but rarely have their bad calls highlighted... For other refs, it's the other way round.

I think it's the same for "empathy with the game". If it's a ref who is liked, then missing certain calls is classed as letting the game be played.... For other refs, missing the same decision would be called out as a reason why they're not officiating at higher levels of the game.

Ultimately, it's a game with a lot of laws, and if it's the players who are disobeying the laws, then maybe it shouldn't be the refs that are blamed if they're blowing the whistle

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Rob Miller... Definitely staying next season
« on: July 24, 2021, 09:16:15 AM »

Wasps have just tweeted about next season, and how it'll be great to see players scoring tries next season, and they include Rob Miller in that.

Therefore, he's definitely here for at least one more season
