Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Saracens
« on: June 02, 2023, 11:34:11 AM »
Good mate of mine is a Saracens supporter, ex STH when they played at Vicarage Rd. He put a celebratory message and picture on social media after their win - nothing redemptive, just celebratory - and I replied with "so pleased they have got a return on their investment".

Don't want to fall out over it so we will avoid the topic of rugby for a while. Because my club is no longer he will never have the moral high ground, never mind the systematic and proven level of cheating that went on, and to many still goes unpunished.

Why not just rename to Wasps Warriors and be done with it. Where next? Carlisle?

Last time I travelled from London to Worcester by train it was a chore I have avoided since.

To be honest, I'd rather Wasps commit to the Coventry area, or relocate back to London and play in National League 2 than do this.

Atlas have bought the name and the assets without any intention of bending to the RFUs requirements, now take their money to suck the lifeblood out of another local community rugby club.

So much wrong with this.

Rename Stourbridge to Sixways, relocate them 25 miles down the road to try to leverage some income from their main asset. It stinks, it's worse than what happened to Wasps over the last 8-9 years. If I was a Stourbridge or Warriors supporter I'd take no part in whatever entity arises from this mess.

slightly worried that wasps seem to be signing up to the onerous RFU controls that Worcester won't.

But surely this is the exact due diligence fans have been asking the RFU & PRL for? You can't complain when they try & make sure only fit & proper owners take charge going forward?

Of course. I'm not complaining. Maybe I wouldn't worry if I knew what they were, but the Twitter thread earlier implies things that seem beyond a governing body role.

I'm loving all the positive noises coming out, slightly worried that wasps seem to be signing up to the onerous RFU controls that Worcester won't.

Also, nothing against the Coventry majority, but I'm fed up with the vocal minority and don't want to go back there. Also, if SISU were 'awkward', look forward to dealing with Mike Cashley!

Intrigued what the Cov RFC news is ... seems like it will upset the short-sighted, but good news for the 'big picture'?

Anyone else with the depressing feeling that the future of our club entirely rests on what side of bed an RFU pen pusher got out of this morning?!

I think it is partly about that in respect of the owners tests. The RFU was recently (and correctly) hauled over the coals by DCMS so expect them to be extra vigilant. Also, how they will interpret the phoenix club rule in respect of where new Wasps have proposed to base themselves will decide the league.

And then, whether the prospective owners business plans still stack up without the P share and in whatever league the RFU decide we should be in.

I anticipate an extension and no resolution until well into the new year.

Does anything happen over the weekend on these sorts of things?

I assume administrators and potential purchasers would be happy to push on to get it over the line, but banks won't, and do courts need to give the final nod to whatever % in the pound will be paid back?

And would the RFU progress the owners tests over the weekend? We've seen how the Worcester bid has been delayed by those tests alone, never mind the due diligence process the administrators would have to carry out.

We have to assume it is in progress but at 5pm today, there is only one business day left.

Cheers Simmo and good luck for the future. Should have more caps to his name really.

These new owner tests are probably because of the DCMS committee hearing a few weeks ago, better late than never.

My worry is that we have heard nothing from Wasps' administrators or any consortium, and the deadline is on Monday.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Our former tenants
« on: December 05, 2022, 11:09:41 AM »
Astonishing. What is Ashley's end-game here?

No point owning a stadium if there are no sports teams playing in it.

So I think he is either trying to distress CCFC to encourage a sale having not made any traction in negotiations with SISU, or he wants to re-negotiate the terms of the tenancy, again, not made any progress in negotiations with CCFC.

Latter is more likely but wouldn't be surprised at the former. Be interesting if SISU are trying to play hard-ball with Ashley!

Feel for the genuine fans of the club, but the minority representative didn't seem to be concerned about the uncertainty the Wasps situation was going to create.

Definitely more scope for making the game more exciting, and easier to understand.

I also think that the money is not there to support two professional leagues, but I'd add a 'yet' to that statement.

If you assume there will be a Wasps and Worcester in the Championship next year, plus say a relegated London Irish to get to the 10 team prem, then that instantly makes the Championship more competitive and attractive. Especially if you also consider there are other competitive teams, Ealing, Jersey, etc.

To support and nurture this, the championship needs more visibility, better profile, maybe free to air live games even if just online. But overall more publicity and profile - I'm not a media expert.

Also, further limit premiership salary caps (don't increase them), remove barriers to promotion, make it a sporting meritocracy and not based on whether you could hypothetically get 10,000 fans, etc, and go for a two up two down promotion/relegation system, and over time, say 5-10 years, the money and players trickle down, interest in the championship grows, and the gap closes.

This is speculation, but if you don't try you will never know. And at the moment, the game is shrinking.

If the money clubs insist on chasing bigger budgets and more glamour and share of the prize then the above will never happen. It's in this that we need a strong RFU, to actually lower budgets and make the competition more equitable, for the longer term health of the game.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Wasps facing relegation
« on: October 12, 2022, 04:16:26 PM »
As much as I feel for those whose livelihoods gave disappeared and for myself and fellow Waspies whose rugby needs will no longer be met, I can't help but feel anger at those who have had control of the club going back 25 years or more.

It's been one calamity after another.

A book could be written, if there is to be one let's hope it is done by a supporter rather than let one of the people who 'ran' the club profit.

Very sad day indeed. I tried to follow to Coventry, couldn't for logistical reasons, decided to turn my back on Wasps in about 2015 ish - but have learnt that you just can't switch it off.

Very sad day. Fingers crossed the whole shebang is bought from administration and resurrected by someone who knows what they are doing, with the money to do it.

Barnes is on to something in my view.

Do away with the premiership cup, find a proper sponsor, get some decent prize money and elevate the profile of the Premiership 7s, played on free to air TV over the course of a few weeks (like the Hundred). Use it to experiment with the laws, bring in more colour and razzmatazz - again just like The Hundred to attract younger fans.

The 15s game is what it is, it's there for the purists, if you tweak it too much you're in danger of turning it into League.

I like to watch an England Test (cricket), and I also enjoy a Twenty20 - they are different games for me, but I don't think one could survive without the other.
