Wasps Rugby Discussion / Average attendances
« on: July 11, 2019, 11:43:49 AM »
Taken from a Bristol Newspaper (apologies if its been posted but I could find anything)

I believe these are the figures of tickets sold/issued (incl ST's) and not the actual amount of people through the turnstiles.

The 2 top teams for the last few years are low down in the table but that's as a result of their grounds. I wonder how many supporters they could attract if they had bigger stadiums. The max (Tigers aside) that a club and their catchement area seems to be around 14k - 16k. I wonder if that will increase much over the next 10 yrs (i.e potentially how long CVC will stay around)

https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/rugby/rugby-news/bristol-bears-second-best-supported-2949929

Average attendance at home stadiums (Total Attendance)
Leicester Tigers – 20,987 (230,855)
Bristol Bears – 16,348 (179,827)
Wasps – 16,160 (177,761)
Gloucester – 14,378 (158,158)
Bath - 14,192 (141,924)
Harlequins – 13,044 (130,435)
Northampton Saints – 12,936 (129,356)
Exeter Chiefs – 12,037 (144,446)
Saracens – 9,191 (101,098)
Worcester Warriors – 8,287 (91,162)
Newcastle Falcons – 7,354 (73,542)
Sale Sharks – 6,586 (72,443)

This figure was calculated using Premiership match reports, excluding games which were all played at larger venues away from clubs' home grounds; rounded to the nearest number.
Games excluded are:
The Clash (Bath v Bristol - 60,152 at Twickenham)
Big Game 11 (Harlequins v Wasps - 82,000 at Twickenham)
The Derby (Leicester v Northampton - 40,013 at Twickenham)

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Ringfencing

https://www.rugbypass.com/news/date-set-for-gallagher-premiership-vote

I'm not sure if you can interpret this as gospel.

As far as I'm aware the RFU have to sign off on it though, and they will be under pressure from the clubs in Championship. Both will be thinking.. "What's in it for us??"

I read somewhere that those clubs were offered a sweetner from PRL or CVC of about £30k each to clubs to not object, which seems to be chicken feed, a poultry amount.. a "fowl" stench

I'm against ringfencing but I can see why some clubs would welcome it but I don't think it will change the way clubs run their finances, which is the bigger issue.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Players converted to coaching
« on: June 13, 2019, 11:45:48 AM »
Many hope that Gopps transitions to being a coach at Wasps.

I believe he'd make a good coach but I've possibly said it on this and the other forum before that I don't think is a productive thing for a player to become a coach at the same club.

In my mind there's too much familiarity with current players and staff, systems, idealogy. I think a good coach probably has a background in various different environments.

I always quote Tigers and Quins of internal promotion not being a healthy process whereas

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/48610056

ROG is really doing his apprenticeship.. different countries, different clubs, different styles. I think he was at Racing as well for a while before going to the Crusaders.

There are a number of young (ish) English coaches in France earning their corn as well (I think)

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Premiership Grounds
« on: May 30, 2019, 08:53:02 AM »
As the season draws to  an end, which grounds that people have visited this season (or perhaps last ) would you go back to and which you'd probably not, taking into account facilities, access (parking), prices, atmosphere.

This topic is partly inspired by a thread on the Saints forum so I'll give them credit for this.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / 4G pitches
« on: April 12, 2019, 10:04:39 AM »
I'm not sure if there was a thread for this already  - I think its been discussed before but perhaps in another topic (perhaps another forum?)

Haskell and Tindall on their latest podcast  (link below for those who haven't seen it) discuss (amongst other things) suitability of 4g pitches. Tinds admitted his experience of them was limited but didn't enjoy playing on them and Hask hasn't met a player yet (obviously not a massive survey) that enjoys or looks forward to the prospect of playing on them.

The host for the show this week (Vernon - Alex Payne was away skiing) quoted  that there was no evidence of there being more injurires but what injuries there were, were more severe.

So does that imply there has been a limited study?

Hask also pointed out that players at no time had been asked about having to play on 4G pitches. Do you think more research will take place before another club installs one?

They also questioned the argument of lower maintenance costs and whether they do actualy get used that much by external community clubs (another reason for having them). Both Hask and Tinds were fine with the hybrid pitches as they offer the best of both worlds.

The section starts at about 20 mins but feel free to watch Hask rant on about other things and also have another sly dig at Wasps.

Vinnie Jones at 6.. doesn't mind the hard graft
Rooney at hooker.. for obvious reasons

Interesting decision but WRU have forewarned players from both Ospreys and Scarlets to start making arrangments to find work elsewhere.

Choose film actors that would fill you're ideal XV.

(I've stolen the idea from House of Rugby)

1. Arnold .. He won't take a step back
2.
3.Jack Black at loosehead.. short and squat with a bit of lip to give to his opposition
4.
5.
6.
7.
8. Denzel Washington... Over sees everything but with an under current of menace
9. Jason Statham.. quick hands
10.
11.
12.
13.
14.
15.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / World Rugby - Player insurance
« on: December 22, 2018, 09:47:02 AM »
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/dec/21/premiership-world-rugby-player-insurance-legal-threat

So the PRL are obviously using the Dale Carnegie marketing mantra of "How to win friends and influence people" ... probably annoying the other home union nations again.

Interestingly it sheds some light on the issue of players picking injuries whilst away on international duty (this was discussed a few times on the DW board in relation to the Sam Jones injury and retirement, and the various other long term injuries picked up in Eng training camps).

(I had to read it 3 times before I got my head around it.. I think)

It seems there's a World Rugby reg forcing Tier 1 nations to pay up to £225k to cover a players club salary if injury ocurs on national duty.. if a player earns more than £225k then the club has to make up the difference.

World Rugby themselves pick up the bill if its  Tier 2 international player

With salary inflation PRL want that increased, if its not then they are threatening not to allow GP based players (non-england) to join their national squads before the official window starts for the WC...

That is if I'm reading all that correctly.

No wonder the RFU are strapped for cash though, imagine the insurance bills they've been paying out thanks to Eddies training camps  ;D

The question is.. what constitutes "international duty". Does that include training camps etc

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Challenge Cup
« on: December 17, 2018, 11:01:05 AM »
I was just reading about the Saints cancelled game in Romania and realised that I've not watched a Challenge Cup game, then I realised BT aren't televising them? Are the games on TV with another broadcaster?

Morning everyone (and I know the subject heading isn't probably what French people actually say.. its my Del Boy literal translation - mangetout naturalle)

Fingers crossed for an unexpected shock result but I say that in hope more than expectation.

Best of luck to all the travelling supporters who it sounds like have had a few hurdles thrown in their way

Wasps Rugby Discussion / OT - Motorbikes
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:03:57 PM »
My first New Topic on the forum so I hope Vesp doesn't mind as its non-rugby.

Looking at the Who Are You Really thread, there's a disproportionate amount of bikers on here (or is a disproportionate amount of middle age men that ride bikes hoping to re-live their lost youth?)

My question for them is, where's the best road or biking experience you've had (be it in this country or abroad)?

I've ridden through France and then the Swiss Alps which was amazing. I noticed that people are very accommodating and helpful towards bikers .. a bit like rugby supporters.. kindred spirits
