Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Worcester Update
« on: February 14, 2024, 06:11:27 PM »
Fans of other clubs which I have spoken to have sympathy (the more intelligent understand that their club might be next!) but don't see why Wasps, of the others, should get any kind of special treatment, especially if it means established Champ clubs get relegated because they don't fit the franchise system, or don't want to. No one wants a franchise system where clubs get promoted or relegated on anything other than playing performance.

Whilst all very positive there's nothing really of substance in there. It all revolves around Prem 2 which has not progressed past the squabbling stages.

Cars and most other vehicles are not engineered to run at or below 20 mph.

I don't think is correct any more. If you place your car in 3rd and drive at 20mph the engine will be virtually idling & you will be burning almost no fuel. There's less accelerating up to speed & braking again so less omissions & less wear & tear on your vehicle.

The cost to society of reducing the speeds to 20 mph - more pollution in urban areas directly from emissions and indirectly from tyres and brakes, cost in fuel, engine strain etc - has to be weighed against this.

There's plenty of readily available studies that show reduced pollution, & less wear & tear on engines, brakes & tyres because people aren't speeding up or slowing down. However some cities had an average speed of 17 mph before the implementation of a 20 mph limit so not entirely sure what the point was.
Like most things you can find "facts" to prove just about anything you want.

Large chunks of London are now 20 mph zones. TFL have introduced it on selected roads & several boroughs have put blanket speed limits in place.

Apparently, "monitoring of the 20mph schemes in London shows that since they were introduced, the number of collisions has reduced by 25% (from 406 to 304), and collisions resulting in death or serious injury have also reduced by 25% (from 94 to 71), demonstrating the huge impact of lowering speeds across London."

But that's TFL's own figures so should be suitably doubted.
I have to say that once you get used to it, its actually more relaxing and a lot of the time roads are so busy you can't do much over 20 if you wanted to.

This could blow the Premiership out of the water and completely fuck the RFU. Could be interesting for the Wasps phoenix.

Not sure how any of those things would happen.
The story as written is about Saudi's investing in individual clubs, like they have done with Newcastle United, not setting up a separate competition structure, like in golf.
As for Wasps, why would anyone invest in a club that's gone bust? Why not buy a chunk of an already moderately successful club like those listed?

I thought he was still out. I have nothing against Ford if he has a decent game plan to follow, but was hoping a absence of Ford & Farrell would force a more exciting game plan, never mind  :(

How many of the new faces will actually play?

Given the number of injuries, look like quite a few might be starting!
& with no Ford or Farrell (and no Marcus Smith) looks like the game plan might have to change!

Rob Miller was doing some form of sports marketing but can't find much about it now.

I do wonder if some of the guys who seem to be flourishing, Maasi-White, Opoku-Fordour, Feyi-Waboso, Fisilau, Miller-Mills, were still at Wasps how much actual game time would they have got?
Fisilau for example, would he really have forced his way into a back row of Brad, Jack, Tom, Alfie, Nizaam ?
Dont think Feyi-Waboso got a prem start for Wasps did he?
Miller-Mills was always a 3rd or 4th choice at Wasps now he's in the Scotland squad.

Tyrone Green for England?

He's a Saffa (SA schools & u20s caps) who, apparently, has gone on record as saying he only wants to play for them.
Doesn't mean he won't qualify on residency at some point, nor that he doesn't have an English granny lurking somewhere in his family tree.

Interesting articles.
Also a centure capital firm has just taken over Cardiff.
You would wonder what such a firm would want with a Welsh Rugby side given that the WRFU seems to have presided over an even bigger mess than the RFU.
But as has been said about CVC, they don't do this for fun or ego's its about money & they think they can make a profit on it.
If others can be convinced maybe the investment in the game can be found to move things forward? Too late for Wasps, Warriors & Irish (Jersey might be able to recover IMO).

Ah, the famously Scottish Elliot Millar-Mills whose sister Harriet has 60 England caps

But their sister Bridgit played rugby for Scotland, so not much of an issue I would have thought. Famously they were both used in a Guinness ad...

As for other siblings, fill your boots

Just seen that Harry Mallinder is also joining the gateway, he is looking at a kicker/punter position.

What happened to him at Saints? He was the next big thing, but I see he ended up in Japan. That obviously didnt work out.
Would be sad if a player that talented ended up  "just" kicking in the NFL.

That said, he's probably more likely to succeed as a kicker than LRZ. Far less complexity involved

I seem to remember that he got very little playing time, and I felt he was being overlooked quite often?

well the stats show that in the 2018/19 season, the one where Wade left, he started every game & played the full 80 in all of them.

The season before he started in 25 out of 28 (only not playing at all in one game) games & he averaged 74 minutes playing time.

Now he may have fallen out of love with rugby & lack of England selection may have been a factor but as far as Wasps selection went, he was playing plenty.
