Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Training Centre
« on: October 15, 2020, 06:01:26 PM »
Henley in Arden (no-where near the Thames) strikes me as a place that have influential lurkers in the background (and yes.. I'm local). If the residents don't want Wasps there then so be it. I'm not sure they can stop a viable economic decision that's out of their hands though (that's not just Wasps but other alternatives I'm guessing its classed as a brown  site so any developer for housing can't claim vat back).

They did allow for a very dissapointing golf course to be constructed not far from the centre of the town so some developements do go ahead.

I'm sure whoever takes on the site will have to take on Strat Council's "community angle".. be that housing.. a chemical industrial plant or a butterfly farm.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: 7 Positive COVID tests
« on: October 14, 2020, 09:21:23 PM »
From the Sale  saga it seems tests are done on Mon/Tues and Thurs/Friday.

Either way, going by what happened at Sale, I think we'll have more by the end of this week.

Whether someone is feeling ok or not isn't important. A positive test should mean that those who have been in contact need to isolate. I hope Wasps make the correct decision.

Bristol must now be really worried

Baldpaul1001 - I think one of our more regular posters said they knew someone that owned a shop in Henley and would ask for their point of view. Perhaps that person then joined to make a comment.

If there are alternative rugby awards.. can I give a shout out to Le Bouj's Movember tash in the making plus his early 80's hair.

From what I've seen, Spencer and Mailins have made quite a difference to both of their foster clubs. Pat Lam quite often takes the "holier than though" soapbox but in taking on Earle and Mailins he fell off that

I seem to recall Motormouth Healey saying there was a deal in place that would allow Minozzi to play in the final (if we got there) but there was some quid pro quo arrangement.

Is this something to do with International Windows?

Perhaps Wasps are under no obligation to release Minozzi for certain games but are for others therefore a deal has been brokered

"Perhaps his match scores were lower then the rest?"

Is that code for being "useless"

Very good point Mellie

If anything (having just watched the highlights), there was more reason to pull Hughes' quick tap.. he was no-where near the mark and I'm not sure the ref was looking at Hughes when he took it (occasionally players either fail to tap the ball with their foot or knock it on when doing so being in a rush to take it.).

Referring to another comment. You learn in junior rugby never to turn your back on a penalty.. if players do that, it's their own fault.

I think it's more he did it behind the ref, at least that's how it looks. So:
1. How did the ref know he took a quick tap
2. How are Bristol meant to know he took a quick tap and tackle him if the ref is in the way?

I'm on the side that it's not fair. If Bristol did that to me, I'd not like it. But it's done now.

Bristol did do it via Hughes.

Unless the ref says "time off", the ball is still in play.  Its not down to the attacking side to allow the defending team to have a chat with the ref or get back into defensive positions.

Occasionally a ref will pull  play back if he/she isn't sure if the ball was tapped in the correct place but rugby does involve 3 officials. In this case it was close enough to the touch judge who gave it the thumbs up (via mic I presume).

So, perfectly fair and within the rules

What annoys me is that the media (printed/tv) don't seem to understand the knock on effect of how it has effected other clubs, other players' moment in the spotlight.

I watched the Lance Armstrong doc a few weeks ago. It was a retrospective with him reflecting on the circumstances, the fallout and I couldn't help but draw comparisons.

I think he genuinely feels he didn't do anything wrong (everyone else was doing it but I was doing it better) and that, because of his status, he was picked on because he was successful. He didn't seem to have a problem suing journalists (Dan Walsh) knowing they were right, or getting staff sacked.

The TdF organisers seemed to willingly turn a blind eye to what many suspected.. again another comparison. The governing body didn't want to taint their golden product.

Looking occasionally at the other club forums it does appear that most seem ambivalent towards Sarries.

For me (and probably most of the other clubs' DoR's).. it was the Daly deal that was the straw that broke the camels back.. "OK. . this is getting silly now"

We're not privvy to what happens on the training ground but from the snippets of information that players have mentioned and from his occasional mid game interviews, I suspect Gleeson has brought a different outlook to attacking options. Generally RL coaches get pigeon holed into defensive duties but modern day rugby teams tend to use RL type rush flat defences. Perhaps Gleeson, with a RL background, has given the players a different insight on how to break that defence down.

From the article

"The survey of around 600 residents by Beaudesert and Henley Joint Parish Councils found 81 per cent of respondents believed a significant community sports and health facility will be lost if the plans are given the go-ahead."

My memory is a little ropey but isn't the current status of the facilities down to it not being used (and being paased on from Stra Council to a private concern and now this) byt the local or wider community.

I'd class Henley in Arden as a very wealthy "expanded" village. Most of the people that live there probably use facilities in Stratford or to the north in the wealthier areas of the southern Brum sprawl (on the way to or from work).

The fact that Stratford council are looking to someone else to make better use of it means that market forces/local demand isn't doing that.

Would land re-categorisation need to take place for housing? Residential land prices in Henley must be towards the higher end of the scale so any developer would be sitting in the shadows rubbing their hands with anticipation (isn't Derek in that business?)

The small selection of people that could be bothered to fill in the questionnaire are probably in the early stages of NIMBY which can be triggered by any type of development.

I doubt many new jobs would be created but I'd take a punt on the local shops benefiting massively.
