Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Launchbury off?
« on: January 24, 2019, 01:10:12 PM »
I really, really hope this isn't true. I agree that rumours are just that until an official announcement but we have seen a number of rumours (Stuart and Hughes et al) leave to the very clubs they were rumoured to be moving to.
This would be a huge blow as it was evident the influence Joe has on the team when he returned for his first game back.

I suppose, having said that, if it was for money (as Sale haven't really been competing for trophies of late) I can hardly blame him. I would do the same!

Primarily he's a blindside but has played 8 earlier in his career. Given how effective over the ball his is he quite probably could get away with filling in at 7  but I suspect his natural on pitch instinct lends itself to being a 6 (he's a decent ball carrier as well) .

So it couldn't really be a bad thing if we had both of them on the field at the same time. Surely we'd have a couple of operators in that area to increase our chances of a turnover/competitiveness at the breakdown?

I think Hask is due to play in their next game but Saints fans can't be that happy about the return on investment from signing him.

He was obviously a stalwart for Wasps and also did a job for Eng, his golden period probable being the 18 months either side of the Australian tour. His performance in the last season for us dropped off to a such a extent that most pundits/fans agreed Jack Willis should be picked ahead of him.

At this moment in time I think Shields offers more than Hask at this moment in time.. but how would they compare when both are/were in their mid to late 20's.

Hask's talents were a bit limited but at the moment Shields hasn't really showed any ball handling skills/offloads either.

Back to the defence question - my feeling is that its related to the breakdown. Other than YY we don't really have anyone that jackals or at the very least players that are able to slow the opposition's ball down or at the very least be a nuisance. This leads to the opposition winning quick recycled ball ruck after ruck which, after a few phases, will lead to tiredness and players out of position.

Does Jack Willis play 6 or 7?

EDIT: The reason I ask is whether there is potential to see both JW and YY on the pitch at the same time?

Certainly a good signing. It will be sad to see Joe go, however.

I personally prefer this site, it feels a much better environment here. Thank you VV  :)

As long as they don't bring the American stereotypical arrogance along with them, then fine by me.

So,
Don't hate the messenger and I don't think this will happen, but in the papers today it was reported that Warren Gatland had no concrete job offers but had had communication with several premiership clubs...
The RFU should break the bank to get Gatland as Jones’ post-World Cup replacement

I'd read previously that he wouldn't consider the RFU job (whether he meant that or not I don't know).
Would you be happy with him bringing his entire coaching setup with him too?
I feel that's what you get with Gatland now. You also get Edwards and Howley.

Would Gatland really want to move from Wales to England?
I feel that he'd be looking for a bigger change of scene than that

Thanks for the stats

My gut feel was close to that. When commenting on Wasps on the Guardian, I did suggest that our defence was pressured by the changes in personnel, but that too often looked like some of the team had been introduced on the coach....

For me, the Leinster game was the first for a while where I felt the defence was coordinated, if outflanked at times, by a much better team. And that was the difference. We seemed to be conceding poor tries too often prior to that. More and fresh stickum perhaps?

Now, I fully accept that if we were in a better place, attack-wise, then the defence would be less pressured, but it does look like a mild coaching deficit if prep is not up to scratch?

Any thoughts?

The most frustrating part of the Leinster game for me was the dropping of the ball several times when we were very close to scoring. I think it happened at least three times and I genuinely believe we would have put more tries on them if we had only held onto the ball and I don't mean turnovers here.

Completely agree Ross. This is what I found most frustrating about the game.

Dai on Jack Owlett:

https://www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/rugby/rugby-rumours-wasps-exeter-chiefs-15692225

A couple of other clubs interested but he chose us. Now just why would a young player do that if we were about to go down the kharzi?

Yes indeed, swings and roundabouts up and downs a rollercoaster ride this week!

I feel positive even if ED goes.

Btw does the other place deliberately go down on days when  it's all kicking off?

It goes down due to lack of "articles".

More club supporters have set up their own network.. Glos have the shedweb.. I think Quins have their own now.. so thank vv for setting this up

+1 I really like this site (nothing wrong with DW). The environment feels better here too.

Bollocks. Was really hoping he'd stick around. Rumour is Bath waved a huge check under his nose.

I suppose that's why Wasps have timed each announcement to try and soften the blow of Will Stuart.

I really would like a line drawn under this and have someone come out and say what's happening. That way rumours can end.

Good news (and the link worked fine). Here's hoping for a win.

Thanks Ross!

For the previous 28K+ games, the tickets sold at about 500-1000 a day in the days running up to it, and about 500 on the day, with most (as you would expect, selling in the late evening (I monitored the seats being sold - sad old git that I am).

That would suggest they would sell 2K-3K more in these coming days, and they only have 2k left to sell. Plus, they have reduced the capacity since that Tigers game, with the new screen taking up more seat spaces than the older, smaller one did.

Sounds very promising for the remaining tickets to be sold.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Cheika survives the axe

Is Scott Johnson the coach that used to be with Wales and then perhaps was head coach for USA for a period of time.. or am I getting names and faces mixed up?

Seems a curious decision by Oz RU to bring in someone above Cheika. Its like a polite way of sacking someone, similar to how Nick Kennedy at LI was forced out

I had thought that too.
