Octavian Morariu, President of Rugby Europe & Member of International Olympic Committee commented:

Even though I hoped hat these news won’t be confirmed, unfortunately, I can now sadly say that Oleksi Tsibko, former captain of the Ukrainian national team, former president of the Ukrainian Rugby Union (2003-2005) and also Mayor of Smela City (2015-2018) died defending his town and his country.
May he Rest in Peace and be always remembered!

Sad news but I can guarantee I would be doing the same if, heaven forbid, we were ever in that position.

The world's rugby community should be touched by this.

That was a really enjoyable 30 minutes.......great memories! It wasn't long enough to include more of the great characters involved with Wasps at that time but certainly gave a sense of the intensity.
Funnily enough I had completely erased my memory of that home loss to Celtic Warriors even though I was at the match but remember the rest so clearly. Quite how LBND and Volls managed to carry on after that head collision vs Gloucester in the quarter final is still beyond me as we heard the sound from the halfway line....just imagine the reaction nowdays! I also had not realised the family background situation for Trevor before the Munster game.....then he scores the winning try.....what a guy!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Wasps Sign Lions Captain Burger Odendaal
« on: February 22, 2022, 06:43:13 PM »
This looks to be a really good signing for us. It is difficult to get a real picture from the tribute/highlights link but he appears to be more than a bosh merchant......and clearly has impressed John Mitchell. I am looking forward to seeing how he can gel with Ryan Mills as, on the face of it, they could be very complementary. He will give us more than Jimmy does in terms of physicality and attacking threat and probably the same with Fekitoa from an attacking perspective.
With Sam Spink and Ollie Hartley learning from them and Le Bourgeois as a back-up, I am pretty comfortable with our combinations.....never mind about the Odogwu option at centre.
What we will need are Atkinson and Umaga to step up as we need a reliable goal kicker to cover what Jimmy brought to us.
I am not sure we are really lacking in any department for next season as long as we can keep our props and hookers healthy!
Thoughts on other areas we are short on?.......with Jacob looking to be a playmaker fullback and Miller to provide a safe pair of hands (try to put the Exeter game out of your mind!) at fullback and cover for flyhalf are there any signings we need to make for next season?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Bugger - Launch recalled by Eddie
« on: February 08, 2022, 12:53:54 PM »
This smacks of desperation by mad Eddie.......to even consider playing someone who has been out for so long with a serious injury and who has not yet played a full game back (oh! and who certainly got some knocks last weekend).

I am a fan of what Eliot Stooke has brought to us since joining and would have him ahead of Ewels and Isiekwe never mind a not too/fully fit Launch. I would love to see Eliot's stats against the others as I wonder if he has even been told he is on the England radar.

If Tom Willis is  back I think it would be a good idea to give Brad a week break as he looked to be "running on empty" vs Exeter compared to what we have come to expect from him. That said, I would also add that Launch would need to be playing to give us some leadership on the pitch as that has been a huge additional part of what Brad has brought to the team.
I am not sure about Miller as I have strong memories of him missing tackles he should have made in previous outings at full back last season. I would have Crossdale at FB as he does also give us a greater attacking threat.
What a great conversation to be having after all the injuries we have had to work around!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: England squad
« on: February 04, 2022, 06:08:41 PM »
Has now been reduced to 29 players, I know EJ does a lot of stupid stuff but I’m finding this squad very odd.

The 2nd row is difficult to fathom. He has itoje, which is obvious, then his other choices are Chessum, Ewels and maybe Isiekwe, who may even have to play in the back row.

I know it’s good for us but how the hell is Chessum and Ewels ahead of Stooke.
....................

I would like England to do well but I’m struggling to see us get pass Scotland, Ireland and France

I fully agree with the above and cannot think of a second row better than Itoje with Stooke at present based on what we have seen though the season so far. Do you think Mad Eddie has clocked the impact Eliot has had and what do you think he has to do to get representative honours?

I really hope I am wrong but if I were a betting man I would be going with Scotland to get the win. Some friends in Jockland are going to the match and tell me the weather forecast is foul!

Agreed....that is about as good as we could have expected. The areas of concern for me are fullback and front row where we are going to be under pressure. That back row confrontation is going to be really interesting!

Disappointed not to see Ryan Mills and Crossdale available......any news on them as I thought we had been told Mills would be available for selection?

It was a replacement forward (#16) who got in Jacob's way at the end so I wouldn't blame him for that........however he is just too prone to brain farts that ultimately cost us. Great comeback by the boys.....as usual for Wasps it was so frustrating but ends up with you feeling proud of them.
Allez Wasps!!!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Exeter to ditch Branding
« on: November 26, 2021, 07:45:35 PM »
I am afraid I disagree with most of the above posts. My view is that people are being too PC over such matters and that Exeter's "Chiefs" branding is a bit of fun and I find it incredible that American Indians would be so sensitive as to want an English rugby team to change their name association. I am certainly in the camp of opposition supporters that do not like the chanting/drums etc but I also do not like most things opposition supporters do!.......and wish we had something catchier to shout at Wasps (we did try hard to come up with something different while at Adams Park but didn't get very far!). That said, it adds to the atmosphere and that, on balance is a good thing for me.
Another way of looking at this is that the reason Chiefs are such a strong logo is that people immediately perceive them as proud, brave and strong........is that insulting?

I may be a minority of one here but is "The Chiefs" brand really so awful and insensitive? ..........I will put my hard hat on now :-\ :-\

I hope this is not an oversight but Alfie is not mentioned as being unavailable which to me means that he is now available for selection again. Any news on when he will be back? I would have loved to have seen him on the bench this weekend but understand his return needs to be managed carefully......particularly after what happened last time. Fingers crossed!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Irish v Wasps: Post match thoughts.
« on: June 06, 2021, 12:00:18 AM »
Just home after an exhausting experience. First, Brentford is a great ground, excellent facilities and a great (in main) bunch of supporters. After sitting in the sun at completely the wrong end for watching the action all 4 of us were, in turns, despairing, frustrated and then completely exhilarated; my daughter even fell over as she jumped up too quickly to celebrate as she got so dizzy in the heat.
I echo the comments above that the first half was one of the worst halves I have seen from Wasps.....and that includes Pertemps Bees! I have to watch the game back but we just didn't seem to be able to defend the quick ball and it looked like the players had never met each other before, particularly in the midfield. In that first half we were saying that Jacob just has to tackle better and Oghre has to hit his jumpers. West played really well while he was on, Shields was his usual inspiring self but seemed to get on the wrong side of the ref too many times, Rowlands was playing well and Dan Robson just continues to be superb.....apart from the knock on when trying to take a quick penalty!
Over drinks at half time we were really down and were just hoping for something in the second half to save some pride...little did we think we would actually win it.
Whatever was said at half time certainly worked and we were so impressed and proud with the boys. All the subs seemed to make a positive impact and we might have won it easier if Jacob had kicked better.
All in all a great day out and fantastic to be watching live rugby again.
Now for the Tigers......we will have to bring the second half performance for the full 80 minutes. Come on boys, you can do it!!
