Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Ben Morris signs on again

Surely now with Shields, Willis J, Rieder, Morris, Johnson, Willis T, Carr, Vailanu and Curran in the academy committed for next year in the 6/8 shirt and of course Young able to play wherever he wants the Mark Wilson rumours are surely unfounded.
Think we’re a first choice lock short before more money being spent in the back row

Not sure about the huge hyperbole bobby bridge put into Myall’s contribution leading to Sirker’s first try. Looks like he just ran a while, drew the man and passed the ball to the faster guy.
We'd be in the top four if one or two others in the squad did that from time to time.

Edit: looks like I hyperbolised the hyperbole, not sure what I was up to there and must have my articles confused or something. Think it was Cardall instead who passed to Sirker, however if it was Myall involved in the first try in the white scrum cap then that was great work

That is true, should have mentioned that he managed to catch the ball first and did knock it on either

Great break from spink down the centre there too, hint of the Daly’s there back when people liked him more.

Umaga pulling the strings made the back line look the most fluid it has all season I think (of course from my ltd viewing)

So the A team can play out the last few minutes for the win....

Saying that, they made it very difficult for themselves by the sounds of it, conceding numerous penalties, then a yellow card and then a converted try in the last few mins. They were under lots of pressure but managed to grind out the win great work against a Northampton side who have a lot of momentum at the moment and confidence within their academy set up, always good to pick up away wins

This is exactly how we should be using the A league but unfortunately have not been able to at times due to injuries throughout the squad.
Squad guys like Myall, MLB, Morris and Atkinson used with players coming back from injury with the youngsters who can learn from them in a more stable environment in a more even match up with the opposition.
Guys like Oghre, Cardall, Willis and spink will learn so much more playing alongside more experienced campaigners than if they were the experienced player alongside a loan player or an even younger guy. This has not happened in an A league for quite a while now.
Good to see spink back from injury and could be interesting to see Anderson at 15

What is most interesting for me is that Porter was seemingly picked ahead of Hampson against Glaws. Quite right too imo, if Hampson is off let’s start investing more in Porter. Again can be seen in this squad Oghre starts and captains ahead of the more experience TJ who is also probably off this summer

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Will Porter (+more young players?)
« on: March 24, 2019, 01:52:18 PM »
Can’t see the youngsters getting any gametime under Dai whilst relegation is a mathematical threat.
If the game is tight with 15 to go they will stay on the bench and no chance they’ll get the start.
Only possibility is with Dai losing it with Simpson and Hughes who are off anyway giving T Willis and Porter more of a chance. Umaga riding the bench for two games shows he is not going to play in the more important games.
I’m completely at a loss with Dai’s selection policy now and use of substitutes. And I don’t mean just with the academy, Daly comes straight back in and offers little, same with Shields and Hughes yesterday as well, just a shame J Willis and Young were injured

Looking at Kieran Brookes’ Instagram it appears Marcus Garratt has spent the last three years in the gym. If he can stay fit maybe Dai has plans on him adding some ‘enforcer’ type physicality to things next year

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Player of the Season
« on: March 22, 2019, 10:25:32 PM »
I agree it’s far easier to pick the wooden spoon contenders!!!

Young has been our best player without a doubt but has not played as much as we had hoped.
Ash has really stood up during difficult times.
I personally don’t think Bassett has been great for a few weeks, running straight into contact and not looking for much work in field but has played pretty consistently for most of the season. Cruse is always consistent and. Ben Harris has put in a great shift so at this term

1361
I agree West Wales Wasp, I can easily see strong attacking positions from just inside your own half being scuppered in favour of kicks to touch to attempt more rolling mauls.
Maul laws would be the ones I’d look at first

1362
this article is remarkably similar to a post I made on DW very recently but I’ll let Bobby off.
Miller I would assume is on another year but Cruse re-signing does confuse this a little.
I would get rid of most of these guys to be honest, a little cut throat and I’d much prefer squad retention but some just don’t add much.

Garratt- hardly played in three years due to bulking up season and then injuries.
Myall- one of the best line out operatives and has a few years left in the tank but now seemingly 5th choice.
- instead I’d sign a lump of a South African or a big Fijian lock who could offload and push for a starting spot, think we’ve been lacking at 2nd row this year.

TJ- clearly not trusted by Dai, let Oghre come through and then Barbeary giving them the A league and cup game time.

Hampson- Homer or giving Porter a shot would be a much better option IMO

Watson- scores some belters but just not consistent enough and often injured. With Ambrose Curtis gone as well I’d rather have Owain James on a senior contract and then him and the likes of Sirker given the game time in the cup etc.
Hopefully the Wade size whole that is still evident in the squad Leyds can fill. Him and Minozzi can still create the fleet of foot magic that Watson has.

Gaby- getting old, doesn’t like passing and often injured. With Jimmy back, Fekitoa and the likes of Neal Spjnk and Simmonds coming through I’d rather others got a chance.

West, Miller and Rieder must stay IMO

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Dillyn Leyds

Leyds definitely has some skills but hope we are still looking for some more size and power in our recruitment in the backs.

No chance we’ll sign another 10, Lima, Jimmy on his way back, Searle back next season, Umaga, Miller covers well enough and possibly Leyds signing.
12 however I hope we are still looking at someone or whether Neal could play there more for some bosh!!
Fekitoa or de Jongh are going to end up playing 12 when I think they’re both better 13s, Jimmy isn’t going to go on forever, Booj has been hit or miss (especially in defence)

Max Clarke was mentioned and I think a lot was dependent on whether JJ was staying at Bath or not. Clarke could be looking for more game time but it’s hardly a definite at wasps in the 12 or 13 shirt but he would add some power and is a young EQP.

Need to see if Gaby and Watson stay too.

Leyds however would be an upgrade on the wing on Watson, Neal and the Wade size whole that is left in the squad and probably Bassett, he’ll hopefully be available all year and with Minozzi would cover FB very well for a lot less money than WLR is on

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Joe Atkinson Leaving
« on: March 14, 2019, 08:18:28 PM »
Wondered if a few Championship signings might have even been on one year deals or just got fed up at the lack of game time as has happened before with the likes of Buster Lawrence and Jamie Stevenson have before.
Didn’t let himself down earlier in the season but our backrow hardly made any turnovers until Thomas Young came back from injury. Ben Morris has overtaken him since in the pecking order, Jack Willis is now back and Tom Willis would probably leap frog him next season too so cannot blame him seeking pastures new.
Good luck to him

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: What's changed?
« on: March 11, 2019, 12:00:18 AM »
I really do think people are a little deluded seeing Jimmy’s return as the second coming.
Playing devils advocate as I love Jimmy, but coming back from a tough injury at 35 will be tough anyway yet people seem to forget how much criticism he used to get for not being attacking enough when playing at 10.
When he moved to 12 outside Cips and he had that stellar season with all the awards, is when he became a wasps ‘legend’

Do people really think Jimmy at 12 is going to change the issues we have had with the backs this season????
