Wasps Rugby Discussion / A deeper squad.
« on: June 28, 2021, 05:05:26 PM »
Adding the fantastic news about the return of Carr into the mix I reckon it's starting to look like our squad next year will have quite a bit more depth than this years. I count 9 additions and 13 departures. Crucially though of those 13 I count 6 who didn't add any real options for us last year (Zhvania,Owlett, Sopoaga, Douglas, Sirker and Jaiani). And of the 9 joiners I see them all as being options for the 23. If you throw in international duties for Rowlands the picture is still better. We've probably got another lock incoming and possibly a centre? If we land two decent players in those positions we've a surplus on last year of 4 troubling the matchday 23. With academy promotions that could be higher. If we could possibly get Mills fit that would be like a new player as Watson pretty much will be. Hopefully this will allow us to manage the periods of unavailability for Launchbury, Willis, West and Odogwu. And once they are back, with some much needed injury luck we're looking good!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Millar-Mills
« on: June 20, 2021, 04:54:10 PM »
Was very impressed with our new TH in the second leg play off v Sarries. More than held his own at scrum time against a front row of Vunipola, Koch and George and was also good defensively. Likes a tackle and being involved by the look of it.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Where do we need to improve.
« on: June 13, 2021, 02:52:41 PM »
I think there are many positives to take into next season. But to be improving I wonder where others think the key improvement areas are. There are 4 for me:
1) Game management. We've lost some ridiculous games this year due to bad options - especially in the last 10 mins. We all want to see exciting innovative play but we need to perfect the ability to shut up shop once we've got the ascendancy.
2) Discipline. Just needs to be drummed into the squad pre-season.
3) Maul defence. We had this nailed at the end of last season but we've become easy to score against again from it. Maybe links in to a theory that we may lack a bit of power but for me it's about technique. We really miss Launchbury here.
4 ) Line out. I think we'll be ok at scrum time but we really must develop a stable line out. The attacking positions we've lost from this have cost us loads of points/games.
They are the main things for me. Of lesser importance I'd definitely keep Shields as captain, develop a different restart (signs of that v Tigers) and wrap Dan Robson in cotton wool. Maybe the biggest change we need is a bit more luck.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / More leavers??
« on: June 09, 2021, 08:38:08 PM »
Just seen a photo doing the rounds on FB (validity therefore not confirmed) of most of those leaving at the end of the season. Along with those confirmed also in it are Brookes, Sirker and McIntyre. No Sopoaga or Zhvania (but they may not have been around).

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Restarts.
« on: June 06, 2021, 12:12:55 AM »
I found myself shouting at the screen for varying reasons, good and bad, for a whole 80 minutes today. But what frustrated me no end was our restarts. What are we trying to achieve. From what I can see our optimum (and most regular) outcome is conceding a knock on. We don't seem to be capable of variation and we're just continually making the same errors?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Hislop in Scots summer squad.
« on: June 01, 2021, 01:14:04 PM »
Our new LH Robin Hislop has been selected in Scotlands initial 37 man squad for their summer games. Interesting that he's classed in this sphere already!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Crowds back - spoiler alert.
« on: May 17, 2021, 08:27:14 PM »
Half an hour in. Bears v Gloucester. More than slightly alarmed at how influenced by the crowd Maxwell-Keys is. Virtually refused to cancel a clear knock on try and so wanted to give it for the fans. Very dicey.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Centre pairing
« on: May 10, 2021, 08:28:18 PM »
Looking back on yesterday how do others feel the Fekitoa/Odogwu experiment shaped up. Obviously at 1 game in its far too early to make anything like definitive statements. But first impressions for me were that it may cause us more headaches than benefits. Positionally and defensively it will need a serious amount of work to come off. Going the other way both showed power and promise but it's just unrealistic to play that way. The quandary is that we want Odogwu on the ball more but the only way of doing that is to sacrifice so much else at 13 by moving Fekitoa in one. For me Odogwu starts at wing and is a very useful cover for Fekitoa and probable long term replacement for him. Might sound odd (and probably is) after 1 game but I sort of feel it will see more days like yesterday than not if we stick with it.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Bristol v Exeter - spoiler alert.
« on: April 23, 2021, 09:41:33 PM »
Just finished watching Exeter v Bristol. If you need a context check from last week this is it. Bristol literally never laid a glove on Exeter who were imperious. Bristol entered the Chiefs 22 but twice. Bristol tried to run everything but made a significantly worse job of it than we did. Chiefs once again look a cut above but in terms of the rest there really isn't much in it.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / An angry Lee.
« on: April 17, 2021, 06:44:35 PM »
After the final 30 today it was as angry as I've seen Blackett. I wonder if that's no bad thing. The errors we are making are basics, especially in the backs. I'm not suggesting any lack of effort but maybe it needs a bit of tea cup throwing to just focus minds. My sense is that his coaching style is collaborative/by committee sort of thing. He's also pushed the playing with freedom notion. That's fine but we played from some ludicrous positions today. I'm sure the forwards were absolutely boiling at the casual way the backs seemed to undo their good work - does it need Lee to lay the law down a bit and get a bit tougher when the basics aren't done?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Reynal?
« on: April 10, 2021, 10:04:01 PM »
Mathieu Reynal drawing criticism for his lack of cards for Beard v De Klerk, Hill v Byrne and Kirsten v Byrne. What do people think? Beard v De Klerk for me was a red he just missed. The other two I thought he got right. Probably at least yellows in the Prem.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Differing reactions.
« on: April 03, 2021, 04:26:02 PM »
Must admit I'm finding reaction to today's loss a bit odd. I found it more frustrating than say the Sale loss. Yes we played better but we've just totally butchered what should have been a done deal and a home QF in the Champions Cup. Personally whilst I acknowledge the huge improvement in performance level it means little to me due to the farcical way we contrived to lose. What's just as worrying is that those in charge, outside of the action and with clear heads made odd decisions. I really don't see the point of giving Jimmy and Zach 5 minutes. Give them 20 or more or don't bother. Them not being attuned cost us the game. Why take Taylor off and compromise the set piece but not bring a prop on when Brookes was basically immobile (understandably). Maybe it's down to expectation - I thought we could win going in to the game. Travelling French sides are always beatable and we are a top side. A weeks rest due to losing yes, but that extra week won't do anywhere near as much for energy levels as a win would.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Zhvania.
« on: March 28, 2021, 04:16:48 PM »
Does anybody know what the issue with Zhvania actually is. Found it odd yesterday that we asked Harris to go the full 80 with Owlett as nominal cover when we have an international LH in the squad.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Captaincy change?
« on: March 11, 2021, 01:13:30 PM »
Not sure if anything has or indeed needs to be announced but this is the second time Shields has captained with Young back. Wonder if it is a permanent thing or whether Young/Robson retain team club captaincy or similar? I'm for it though as I've been impressed with Shields communication with the ref and he's always looked and performed like captain material.
