Wasps Rugby Discussion / No panic.
« on: March 07, 2021, 12:12:34 PM »
Acutely frustrating though our current run of form is I don't think most Wasps fans are or need to panic. There's been some OTT reaction across various Wasps based vehicles of fan interaction (not really on here). Outlandish recruitment is suggested, coaching deficiencies proved, whole set ups in question and talk of relegation in a season and a half's time. Five games ago we were the best team in the league. Various circumstances that we are all well rehearsed in have played out but will right themselves. The league is still tight and climbable. I think we just need a break here and there to go for us and we'll be fine (written as much to reassure myself as anyone else)!!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Indiscipline
« on: February 27, 2021, 07:05:01 PM »
Many things are costing us at the moment but by far our most serious issue is indiscipline. I can accept skill levels, confidence and fitness not being there but infringing just doesn't need to happen. I wonder what the coaches are saying to the players in the week? Surely this must be a massively prevalent topic of conversation. Even one of the games we won Blackett highlighted that he's never won a game conceding that many penalties. I don't understand why we keep repeating it. Gaskell is by far the worst offender and must be close to being dropped for it. JTA has conceded the most scrum penalties in the league. But everyone is doing it and we're basically ruling ourselves out of game after game.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Do you play leavers?
« on: February 22, 2021, 08:27:17 PM »
After the Tigers defeat I've seen a few suggestions and had the thoughts myself that some performances may be dipping if players know they are destined for other clubs at the end of the season. We only know the ones announced for sure but there will be others we don't know about. I wonder what others think about whether in principle it's wise to play those who know they are off? Ignoring the fact that injuries may force it is it beneficial? Can you really not play at full throttle in a game of rugby? Is it human nature to ease off if you're not part of the long term plan? Do others even think this has had a bearing on individuals performances. It's a fairly unique situation in rugby given the way contracts are negotiated and it gives cause to this scenario being a factor.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Serious injury for Jack.

What a nightmare. Feel so sorry for him. Looks a bad one.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / No relegation - our approach?
« on: February 13, 2021, 12:08:09 PM »
With relegation scrapped this season I wonder if it may change Lee and his coaches approach. Will they just play a straight bat and go from game to game picking the strongest squads they can. Will they feel inclined to throw in more and more youngsters to give them experience. Will they rest key players who they would normally push to play. Obviously we've still got top 4 and Europe in the mix but I wonder if mindsets may change a little given that threats wise the season has become a "free hit".

Wasps Rugby Discussion / How to restore confidence?
« on: February 06, 2021, 04:05:11 PM »
We currently have an exciting crop of youngsters that are bursting with potential but need careful management. I suppose the case in point is Umaga. Two poor games from him so what's the best way? Do we give him time out of the firing line? We can easily do it with options at 10. Or do we keep selecting him and hope he plays through it? We do have to bear in mind he has less than 30 prem games. Maybe it's time for Atkinson to get a string of games. But we seem to be pinning our colours to the mast in terms of him being our main 10 so will dropping him do more damage?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Spoiler alert Brizz v Sale
« on: February 05, 2021, 10:17:39 PM »
Really enjoyed that game. Felt like two teams we may be tangling with in the tail end of the season. Sale absolutely sure suffocated the Bears, their intensity and defence was outstanding. Amongst all the Saffers what brilliant players the James brothers are - very intelligent players.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Team v Quins?
« on: January 25, 2021, 02:20:24 PM »
Bit of uncertainty with England call ups etc but all is far from lost. With some injury luck I reckon we could field something like this 23 on Sunday:

McIntyre
Cruse
Brookes
Gaskell
Cardall
Willis
Young
Shields
Porter
Umaga
Bassett
Gopperth
Fekitoa
Kibirige
Sopoaga

Bench
Harris
Taylor
JTA
Douglass
T Willis
Vellacott
Watson
Mills

Far from shabby!

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Who next?
« on: January 23, 2021, 04:49:34 PM »
From going from a regular crop of 2internationals (Launch and Minozzi) we now have involvement from those two plus Robson, Umaga, Atkinson, Odogwu, Rowlands, Barbeary and Willis. It's just reward for the way they have played. But who's next. Personally I think it's only a matter of time before West gets recognition. Oghre could feature at some point. Tom Willis is probably a bit further away and I wonder if the back row is now too crowded for Shields to force his way back in. Bassett has always struck me as an international winger. Could be an interesting and challenging phase for us as we're happily producing some outstanding talent.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Call me old fashioned - Sinckler.
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:33:36 PM »
Call me old fashioned but I'm absolutely stunned that Sinckler blatantly used the F word directly to the ref in the Chiefs v Brizz game today and escaped sanction. I'd have just redded him without a moments hesitation. Is this acceptable now? We've got to be careful that this doesn't creep in wholesale otherwise so much of what we love in the game will be compromised.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Pay by position - GP
« on: January 05, 2021, 06:49:45 PM »
BT ran the graphic on pay by position in the Gallagher on Sunday. There were a few movers. Best paid to worst was;
10
4,5
13
3
15
8
6
11, 14
1
9
12
2
7

The two biggest shocks for me were 7's and 13's.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / More answers than questions.
« on: January 02, 2021, 06:59:20 PM »
We are completely transformed under Blackett and his coaching team. One of the things I've been most impressed with is the amount of problem solving they've got through in terms of the team which in turn has given us lots and lots of options now as a squad. We can rotate the front row without lack of impact. We can reliably count Barbeary, Oghre and Gaskell as back rowers. They've unearthed Odogwu as an acceptable 13 and Lima as a possible 15. They've introduced countless youngsters - not forgetting in that the development of Umaga, Willis and West who are now seen as established. It all works because of the trust they convey to the players in terms of their ability. The net result is if you now had to pick our best 23 the options would be wide and varied. All that's left for the coaching team is to turn their amazing work into a trophy or two.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / The Big Question
« on: December 28, 2020, 11:39:26 AM »
Lots of issues creating debate in the new season. One question however, stands out for me. Who manufactures Tom West's contact lenses? They seem to be out more than a tier 4 delivery driver. The mystery of Gaskell's half time scrum cap change and how "the dog" runs without visibly moving his legs will also need answering at some point. :)

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Sale show us the way.
« on: December 20, 2020, 10:13:41 AM »
Watched the Sale v Edinburgh game last night. Really crystallised in my mind that we are on the right track in terms of progress via our academy. Endless SA imports had all the zip of porridge for them. Thought that off the top of my head we could feasibly and without fear field a team that contains
West, Barbeary, Oghre, Cardall, Curran, Porter, Atkinson, Umaga, Spink, Simonds, Willis, Willis and Sirker. I think those in charge deserve praise for the switch in direction we've managed in a short space of time from the necessity of the galacticos to a fantastic sustainable and exciting academy based model.
