Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Team's Up for Budgies - Jack Starts

Think it might only be Atkinson, Myall and possibly MLB that are the only other fit senior players.
Think Langley, Thornton and Porter travelled up last week too

Hope all the props from this weekend came though unscathed as we’re running out again

Who do we think are the others out of contract?
My guesses would be:

Myall - 32, now seemingly 5th choice lock, re-signed ahead of 17/18 season
Garratt - 25, 6th choice lock?? signed ahead of 16/17 season largely unused and seems to have been injured for almost two whole seasons
Gaby - 33, finding some form with continuity but constantly managing knee (?) injury. Signed ahead of 17/18 season.
TJ - 25, signed ahead of 17/18 season - rumoured to be off back to the Championship.
Hampson - 28, signed on FT ahead of the 17/18 season - being pushed by Porter for 3rd choice, rumoured to be off back to the Championship

Tom West ? - Stuart has gone so was West only on a 1 yr deal too?
Championship signings? Any of the 5 from last season perhaps only on 1 yr deals?

Strange comments from Dai, haven’t really heard him speak like that about a players injuries.
Clearly not Watson’s fault as Dai says but also in the same conversation saying he is out of contract this year, would be tough on him to get released due to him not being able to play as much as we hoped....  but then again it has to come into it in terms of a business decision and the returns you get on your investment. Wade and Bassett were/are rarely injured in comparison.

For me Watson is always going to be a third choice winger, we still need someone in who is superior in my opinion to replace Wade and can scare defences

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: WLR Confirms he is off
« on: March 04, 2019, 07:53:28 PM »
He has been my favourite FB at the club of all the galacticos, his performances last season with all of those assists were world class and then he went on to perform well again for SA on the world stage.
I wish him well with his future ventures and don’t resent him for wishing to pursue his international dreams when that option came about again for him and I do not resent Dai for allowing him to do that either.

However as some of mentioned above, the arm flapping, complaining and absolute petulance that have come from him and probably more so from Daly this season are not what I want to see from our players, especially with my son watching, as WLR is his favourite player (after Wade)

Clearly both Daly and WLR have had plenty on their minds this season and WLR has clocked up some serious air miles as well between games which hasn’t helped but he has not been worth the investment in him this season and I look forward to seeing how we build and push on without him next season now.
Last season though.... what a player

I think if his contract is up a few teams will be after his signature. Maybe he has a release clause.
Radwan, Jonny Williams and a few other youngsters will also have a few people circling if Newcastle lose today.
Kibiridge Has been building nicely for a while, is having a good season and was fantastic last week, interested to watch him today.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: 'We were robbed' - Dai Post Match
« on: March 03, 2019, 11:47:34 AM »
I too have watched the game back and there was some poor officiating no doubt but we should have won comfortably before that.
Leicester were awful and we could not build pressure to capitalise.
Watson was on fire but was not given the ball once against Evans, no kicks were ever put in behind him or above him to test him out, and yes he was not always defending on the wing but sometimes it was joe ford and he wasn’t tested either.
A few forward passes, forced offloads that didn’t go to hand after a break, Nemo, dropped one at a key point, two butchered line outs within 10 m after turning down the points.
We were again shockingly poor at holding on to the ball, going through phases and building pressure.
Leicester were actually worse I think and due to our pretty good defence they made a lot of mistakes
But again we seem happy to defend more than we want to attack and gift the ball back and when we are conceding so many penalties I’m not sure it was the best game plan... again

There were some similar comments to this a few weeks ago.
Does anyone else think this might be a little disheartening to the current academy crop?

Willis, Porter and Umaga will surely come through but not sure where that leaves Langley, James, Thornton, Seabrook, Wilson etc? Are they realistically just not going to make the cut?
The ones who came up last year were from a very successful U18 team, like we have seen this year and will surely stand a good chance of becoming first team regulars one day but like Dai said this will be a few years off.

Thornton on Onyeama-Christie have also run in from distance for the A team this year too, do like it when a prop breaks!!

So now:
LH - McIntyre, ZZ, Harris, West, Thornton, Onyeama-Christie (u18 Grad?)

Hooker- Taylor, Cruse, Johnson, TJ?, Oghre, (Barbeary)

TH - JT-A, Brookes, Owlett, Daniels, Alo?Langley?, Hunt

Possibly looking at four in each position in the front row with a couple more academy players for each position too. Looking well stocked.
Biggest hope is that McIntyre can recover or bow out from the game still in a safe state

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: The future looks bright - u18 highlights
« on: February 21, 2019, 09:20:09 PM »
Was that Barbeary with the dink over to himself on our own 22? Not sure he’ll get away with trying that again at senior level but great confidence.

Having a look at these highlights again as well as the others that have been posted and as well as Barbeary, Mawdsley, Tunney, Pichardie and Ademuwagun look the real deal in the forwards, Nearchou looks impressive but as discussed perhaps a little small at LH heightwise so maybe will split shifts between there and hooker.

In the backs Atkinson I think has another year at school despite impressing for two years already at 10. Ma’asi looks to have some impressive feet in the centres, maybe still time to grow as looks a little lightweight but not sure if he too has another year at school.
Williams on the wing looks electric and Bacon at FB has been carving those intelligent lines for a few years now

Yes Owain James has had a substantial knee injury, perhaps ACL and I think will not be ready much before the end of the season.
Real make or break time for him at 21 to push on so hopefully this injury won’t set him back

Wonder how tall he is then? If he’s been playing first choice LH for a couple of years and has been named by Alex Shaw in the top 3 LHs at his age and subsequently picked by England (although that could be as a hooker) he must have a fair bit about him.
Will see what Dai can do with him but even if he wants to play hooker I believe you should really keep hold of whatever front row talent you have and see how it all unfolds.
Barbeary could do a Stuart at 21 years old and we’d have a gap to fill

Saw on FB, Stoke rugby announced congratulations to Pete Vickers on being awarded a uni contract with wasps. Know he’s been around for a few years but not a name I’ve heard mentioned that much, second row I believe but possibly behind Ademuwagun and Pichardie in the pecking order and remember Mawdsley playing second row in the finals last year although maybe has moved FT to 6

Jac A I think you’re right with your uni contract info except Onyeama-Christie was moved ‘officially’ onto an academy university contract a while back

England U18 training squad announced:

Anjo Ademuwagun (Wasps) Harrow School
Zac Nearchou (Wasps) Radley College
Jude Williams (Wasps) Caterham School

Barbeary probably not far off an U20 call up.
In Alex Shaw’s recent article about the top 3 u18s this season in each position,  Ademuwagun, nearchou and Barbeary were included as well as blindside flanker Alfred Mawdsley.

Should all be in with a good shout as well as Tunney and an outside back or two depending on their ages of course, know a fair few of the u18s are still u17

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: 4th!

The fight for 4th is going to be tough, so many teams in the mix. One team suffering a couple of losses in a row could well be out of the running.

This could also be the best relegation battle for a few years too.
