Wasps Rugby Discussion / Ireland v England
« on: March 20, 2021, 05:55:52 PM »
Einstein defined madness as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.

England have reverted to type and are executing badly and it’s getting tedious. A couple of good tries from Ireland and nearly a third.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Do we need a goal kicker?
« on: February 28, 2021, 09:34:25 PM »
The thread on MVG got me thinking.....and I’m thinking out loud ....

Jimmy’s day’s are obviously numbered and he’s spending less time on the field as time passes. He lost his kicking mojo and seems to be struggling to get it back.

Jacob’s record isn’t brilliant and I heard one stat that he’s at 60%.

Lima’s on his way out by all accounts.

Rob Miller’s out of favour and whilst I haven’t seen stats he’s not renowned for his goal kicking it is solid within his range.

Successful teams have outstanding  goal kickers. Not just for converting tries but it keeps the opposition on their toes. In 2003 my boss was an Aussie and he moaned about JW kicking so many goals instead of going for touch - don’t cheat was my response.

I wonder if we’re going for touch because we don’t have the confidence to go for 3pts? That’s a good strategy if you’re converting those opportunities, but we aren’t.

Going touch Is OK when you’ve got control of the game but early on accumulating points sends a message to the opposition. Once you have a good lead those expansive plays are easier.

Building leads is the way to bonus point wins.

So, do we need a good goal kicker or have I missed something?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Sale v Exeter - Spoiler Alert
« on: February 26, 2021, 08:22:33 PM »
Not a bad game but yet another red card for someone going in for a clear out. Again difficult to argue with in the current climate of protecting players.

I hope the guys are watching this and learning, we really don't need to lose another player for 3 or 4 games for a red card.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / BBC Prem League Table - am I going mad?
« on: February 16, 2021, 08:48:39 PM »
I was idly looking at the league table on the BBC website and something didn't look right with the points.  Down to sale it looks OK but after that its a bit weird. I assume (hope for the sake of my sanity) its Covid related:

Quins W5 (20) D1 (2) BP4 = 26 but shows 28.
Saints W5 (20) D0      BP4 = 24 but shows 26
Wasps W5 (20) D0      BP4 = 24 and shows 24

And this one really is puzzling

Newcastle W5 (20) D0 BP2 =22 but shows 23!

The rest don't make sense either.

If its Covid points shouldn't the "win" show up in the win column which it appears to do, and the "losing" 2 points in the BP column?

But where does the Falcon's odd point come from?

Yours,

Puzzled of North Dorset

PS And I 've only had 1 glass of wine

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Bristol v Bath (spoiler)
« on: January 29, 2021, 09:15:24 PM »
If it was a boxing match it would have been stooped as no contest before halftime.

You know life’s against you when this happens:

Bristol line out on 5m line and they change the front row. Good line out and drive, penalty awarded but new hooker goes over and try given. Just before the kick Tom Foley on the TV stops the kick and says that the ball wasn’t grounded.

Result: penalty try and yellow card for cumulative penalties.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Games lost to Covid count towards bans
« on: January 29, 2021, 06:58:09 AM »
From the Beeb:

Quote
Leicester Tigers scrum-half Richard Wigglesworth returns from a ban after a rule change saw games called off due to Covid-19 count towards suspensions.

I'm not sure what to make of this, my instinct is that it is wrong and lessens a punishment, but then again it is out of a club's control.

Lets hope its not going to happen too often.

What does the panel think as I'm open to changing my mind?

I wonder if the one Bath player in this photo was deliberate?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / New rules for games abandoned due to Covid
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:17:08 PM »
From the BBC:

Quote
Premiership Rugby will no longer automatically award five points to teams when the opposition is unable to field a side because of coronavirus.

League bosses confirmed a four-point win will be awarded to the club able to name a side, with two points to the team forced to cancel.

The score will be recorded as 0-0.

"With Covid, we previously had a system which effectively attributed fault," said Premiership Rugby director Phil Winstanley.

"The problem we have with that is it's very, very difficult in the current landscape to say that was something that somebody's done wrong."

Winstanley added that there was "no science" behind the new system, but it was "the fairest way of dealing with this".

I'm not sure there's a fair way of doing it if, as we were told. Sale's problems were driven primarily by a false negative, hardly something they could control.

It could make this year's Premiership a bit of a lottery if teams get infections and miss games they might have expected a 5-point win or a losing BP.

Still, at least they're playing and with a vaccine in sight it might not last long. Its probably more important to get fans back than worry about the risk of games being missed.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Maggie Alphonsi's Player Ratings
« on: October 24, 2020, 01:35:33 PM »
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/rugby-union/2020/10/24/premiership-final-preview-maggie-alphonsis-player-ratings/

(I haven't copied and pasted because its a bit long and works better in print if you've seen it.)

Maggie's done a player by player analysis and comparison and given them marks out of 10. There's more than a few I would quibble with, but the final score comes out as :

Exeter Chiefs: 124
Wasps: 118

Maybe we're close that that, maybe not, but what she then doesn't talk about is whether or not the teams are greater than the sum of the parts. I think both teams are and there's no denying Chiefs are where there are because they do play better than the sum of their parts.

I'd argue that we're even more of a team and playing far greater than the sum of the parts, especially in broken play and attack, but as we saw against Bristol the defence has really stepped up.

I think the teams are a lot closer than Maggies scores imply.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / EAs - a horrible thought
« on: March 15, 2020, 09:55:31 PM »
If the Premiership and Championship is cancelled for this season does it mean that EAs didn't break the salary cap and because the Championship hasn't been concluded they get to stay up?

Bloody tough on Newcastle as well, but that could be an outcome.
