Wasps Rugby Discussion / Latest Clear Out - Saints
« on: April 07, 2022, 03:40:16 PM »
https://www.northamptonsaints.co.uk/news/quartet-of-saints-to-depart-northampton-this-summer

Tuala, Ratuniyarawa, Francis and Naiyaravoro all out the door.  That's a fair bit of quality and experience to lose.

There's a couple of big back 3 players and a centre there who could all offer Wasps something (think we're good for 2nd rows)

Wasps Rugby Discussion / TRP 5th Sept
« on: September 05, 2021, 07:55:12 AM »
Quite a bit of Wasps material this week.

Main news (as opposed to rehashed stuff we've already read) is that Wasps were in the hunt for Stormers lock David Meihuizen, but he is staying in South Africa and Wasps are now looking eelsewhere. So seemingly still in the market for a 2nd row.

Blackett on the need to continue to clamp down on dangerous play and not continue in the same vein as Lions series.

Gopperth on not being ready to retire.

Article on Rob Hoadley's life in rugby; Tom Cruse's pet hates in a "Room 101" piece (can't disagree with any of them!) . And Tom Palmers's dream team which includes a number of old Wasps team mates. .

Think that's about it.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Ed Robinson Leaves Jersey for Premiership
« on: July 02, 2021, 08:02:07 AM »
With last weekend's piece in the RP saying he was on his way to Wasps, confirmation that Ed Robinson has left Jersey Reds.  Expect news on his destination soon.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/57685605

Rob Webber to step up to head coach under DoR Harvey Biljon.  Couple of old Wasps names there.

Article linking Wasps with Scarlets' tight head Peter Scholtz as replacement for Brookes.

Described as a big, strong scrummager, so box ticked there. To be honest I don't follow the Pro14 much so can't say I've seen anything of him. I'm sure some on here will know more though.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / No Lions for Prem Final
« on: April 27, 2021, 01:30:52 PM »
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/56902920

Won't impact Wasps on either count as I don't expect us to A: have anyone selected for the Lions (esp now Launch ruled out) or B: be in the Premiership final, but Exeter in particular could be hard hit.

And for anyone hoping Sarries might go into a potential Championship playoff final a bit short handed, then sorry to disappoint, but that 2nd leg is the previous weekend.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / It Wasn't Eddie's Fault

RFU have concluded their review...

https://www.englandrugby.com/news/article/rugby-football-union-concludes-six-nations-debrief

The panel concluded that while there were a number of contributing factors that led to England’s disappointing fifth place ranking in the Guinness Six Nations and the focus will be on addressing these systemic challenges, there were some specific factors that had an influence on the 2021 Guinness Six Nations tournament as follows:

•    Coaching – the absence of Jason Ryles and Neil Craig were a significant loss in coaching expertise and team support, this had a significant impact on the wider coaching team. The initial unavailability of Matt Proudfoot and isolation of Eddie Jones also had an affect on the effectiveness of the coaching team.

•    Player preparation and availability – several players did not have enough game time going into the Guinness Six Nations. Conversely a wider group were fatigued as a result of being the only country to have back-to-back seasons; resulting in players having no mental break from one season to the next. In addition, a handful of notable players were unavailable.

•    Breakdown indiscipline – improvements required including lower body strength and appropriate skill modifications.

•    Covid – the necessary stringent protocols, in some cases greater than other Unions, had a significant impact on coaching and support staff as well as the playing squad cohesion.

•    Squad transition – the agreed protocols, which the RFU and Eddie were fully supportive of due to Covid challenges, meant fixed squads prevented players coming in and out during the campaign as they would normally.

So it was mostly down to COVID as England's measures were so very different from anyone else's.
And the Premiership clubs who played their own players too much while not letting Sarries join in.
That and the fact that players lacked the skills and physical attributes required to compete at the breakdown.
Oh, and they couldn't rotate players in and out of the squad.  Except Joe Marchant.  And George Martin.
Nothing at all to do with misguided selection based on misplaced loyalty then?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Blackett: 11 Unavailable for Saturday
« on: October 22, 2020, 02:13:42 PM »
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/54644695

Of those 11, Blackett says four would have probably been in the matchday 23.

Probably just about accounts for those missing from yesterday's training footage.  Assuming the matchday 23 he's referring to is pretty close to the semi and that Malakai has not been hit by COVID as well as injury, that's 5 changes to the 23 from the semi.

Not ideal, but we will still have a strong side out, and most of the key names (J Willis, Launchbury, Robson, Gopperth, Umaga etc) were clearly visible.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Europe Next Season
« on: October 11, 2020, 05:41:45 PM »
A welcome bonus in making the final is that we are assured top seeding in Europe next season, and under the new format that is a much bigger advantage than normally. Top 2 from each league play one of the 7th/8th placed teams from each of the other 2 leagues, while 3rd/4th play 5th/6th.

Result is that Wasps 2 pool opponents next season will be either Dragons or Glasgow plus either Montpellier or Toulouse.

Not sure why they got the nod ahead of anyone else, but they have to start somewhere, and at least it's an encouraging step for those of us desperate to get back to watching rugby.  Ricoh next??

Wasps Rugby Discussion / OT: Mako V
« on: March 04, 2020, 08:05:14 AM »
Out of the England squad again after travelling home from Tonga via Hong Kong and being instructed to self-isolate by England.  Did nobody advise him on travel plans?? (assuming he was unable to work it out for himself)  There must have been other routes (via Australia and Middle East / via US).  Perhaps the RFU could be accused of over-reacting, but understandable that they should err on the side of caution.  Quite apart from the personal welfare angle, imagine the clubs' reaction if a dose ran through the England squad after they knowingly allowed the involvement of a player who had traveled to (or more accurately through) a high risk area.

Now this morning I read that both he and Billy are back with Sarries and Mako is available for selection this weekend.  While I'm in no doubt that Sarries have taken every precaution and sought medical advice, it is completely at odds with the RFU's decision.  We're always being told how important player welfare is to the culture at Sarries, so it strikes me as strange that they have adopted a less cautious approach than the RFU.  Or does their undersatnding of "welfare" not stretch beyond £££££??  Or have the RFU just massively over-reacted?  Or is there more to it??

Just the one from Wasps this week.  Well done Jacob on the short list 2 weeks running.

Although for me I think it's Leiua.  Sheedy's break then the most accurate cross field kick.
