Wasps Rugby Discussion / January approaching.
« on: December 07, 2020, 06:26:27 PM »
Slightly odd timing but nevertheless January approaches. Two questions;
1) Do you think we'll see many incoming players.
2) If you could have two or three which positions would you recruit to.
For me I think we might see one or two.
I personally think we need a 10, a quality lock and a 13 as understudy to MF. I don't see JG or LS doing much at 10 going forwards. I really like the look of Atkinson but it's early for him. De Jonghs form has worried me. Odogwu has done well but not sure he's long term. Our issues at lock are currently being exposed and it feels like WR and TC could be departing. Of course in the current climate not a lot of cash is going to be splashed. Going to have to be done clever recruitment.

Bench
West Cruse JTA
Cardall Oghre
Wolstenholme Odogwu Le Bourgeois.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Great Expectations?
« on: November 29, 2020, 11:34:55 AM »
Thus far we've registered a win against a definite top four contender and a BP away at a decent side. Yet the pervading feeling seems to be one of overall disappointment. It was bound to happen I suppose - we've done nothing but win (save the final) since resumption. Losing seems like a jolt. Teams will prepare harder and more thouroughly for us all season. I think the bigger challenge though will be for us to play with the freedom we did last season whilst carrying the extra expectation of winning. When we "freed up" against Bristol and Glaws we scored the sort of tries we were scoring for fun last season. The coaches will need to work hard to keep the freedom flowing.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Hybrids
« on: November 23, 2020, 08:13:01 PM »
One of the en vogue topics at the moment is hybrid players. Wonder if part of our resurgence is down to us having an abundance of these. Forwards wise we have Oghre and Barbeary who can hook and play back row. Our back rowers frequently chop and change during the game. We then have three distributors in the backs (four if you count Mills). Odogwu looked decent at 13 on Sunday. It gives us lots of options and allows clever bench options. I wonder if we'll become like the Dutch football team of the 70's and start a form of total rugby. Although I don't fancy Minozzi at TH.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Eng v Ire - spoiler alert.
« on: November 21, 2020, 04:56:33 PM »
Felt like an easy win in the end. Defence was solid but didn't create much really against a poor Ireland side. Intensity was great. Footnote: Daly is a liability at fullback, both positionally, in the tackle and under the high ball.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Robson's try.
« on: October 11, 2020, 11:28:04 AM »
Bit of media heat about this post match. I couldn't see a problem with it at all. The whistle had gone. If the Bristol players want a dialogue about why that is up to them. Carley quite rightly began explaining but also quite rightly didn't stop the play as Wasps played on. Hopefully it might even stop a bit of the silly appealing for and contesting of decisions. For me refs need to do less of the explaining and in game coaching.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Who will we lose?
« on: October 11, 2020, 09:00:07 AM »
Given that we have so many playing well and have been in the spotlight quite a bit it's fair to assume we'll be losing players to internationals. Who and who comes in:
Definite: Minozzi (Watson), Rowlands (Gaskell)
Probable: Launchbury (Cardall) Willis (T Willis) Robson (Vellacott).
Possible: Taylor (Cruse) Bassett (Odogwu) Umaga (Sopoaga).

It's possible some of our youngsters might get apprentice type calls but hopefully they'd be released back.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Is our balance the key?
« on: September 13, 2020, 08:42:56 PM »
There are obviously a myriad of factors in our upturn in fortunes but it strikes me our balance of power, pace, creativity, grunt and overall ballast has fallen nicely into sync. I think back a few years and we had the stellar backs but a scrum that only achieved parity. Then Dai tried to take us back the other way a bit. Our front row is now as good as it has been for years. Willis has transformed the back row and punches regular holes. Shields is a workhorse. Mills and Fekitoa are a great combination of physicality and craft and we've loads of pace and skill across several back three options. Linking it all up Umaga and Robson look impressive. It's possible we've found that blend of pragmatism and creativity that we've been one side or the other of for some time.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Who gets picked next?
« on: September 09, 2020, 10:16:49 PM »
Slightly and nicer problem to have for Blackett now. Who on earth does he pick v Bristol - or more to the point who can he leave out! I'd go with:

West
Oghre
Alo

Rowlands
Launchbury

Willis J
Barbeary
T Willis

Robson
Umaga

Bassett
Mills
Fekitoa
Kibirige
Minozzi

Harris
Cruse
Brookes
Gaskell
Shields
Gopperth
Vellacott
Spink

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Sunday rugby - spoiler alert
« on: August 30, 2020, 05:04:09 PM »
Tigers getting absolutely pumped at Castle Grim. Thorley has four tries within 30 minutes. Good game Quins v Saints - a good result for us as well as Saints didn't even get a losing BP.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Saints v Bath - Spoiler alert
« on: August 26, 2020, 09:57:37 PM »
Got to say Bath looked a bit tasty tonight. I'm worried about our scrum but it has clarified in my mind that we must play Umaga ten and Jimmy 12. We're going to have no joy trucking it up against them. We'll have to mix things up and be inventive.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / So what to do v Bath?
« on: August 25, 2020, 08:35:22 PM »
Really need to get the Sale game out of the system. So looking forward we've got a tempting six day break before Bath. Tempting as it must be feasible to play most of tonight's team again with a normal sort of break in between. I'd go all in and go much the same again as tonight's squad injuries permitting. I think I'd find a place for Watson, Gaskell and Sopoaga in the 23 probably for Bassett (looks injured), Atkinson and Cardall. I'm actually more hopeful for the Bath game. Sale just don't suit us and often frustrate us.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / TH for Tuesday?
« on: August 21, 2020, 11:29:29 PM »
Looking round the squad for Tuesday we seem well covered everywhere but TH. With Brookes injured and JTA playing a lot of minutes in the last two games what do we do? JTA & BA 40 mins each? BA & Owlett? I think Owlett has to play - and although it's risky I'd pair him with JTA.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Back row juggling.
« on: August 18, 2020, 04:17:47 PM »
Our back row was phenomenal on Sunday. I've been trying to work out how on earth we're going to get through the remaining games in that department however. First up picks BS, TY and JW speak for themselves. But underneath that as far as I can tell we have Morris who could probably play 6,7 or 8. Vailanu who can play 8. Tom Willis who can play 8 or, at a push probably flanker. Douglas who is a 2nd row who can do back row and Gaskell who is the same. It's 6 and 7 that are the issue. We can rotate the 8's to give Shields time at 6 but beyond that I don't see a way round it. My worry is that we overplay JW and TY. A tempting strategy based on their talent but not a great long term.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Loose Heads
« on: August 16, 2020, 09:43:24 PM »
Anyone else seriously impressed with Harris and West? Harris often flies under the radar but he does everything well and always makes hard yards in contact. I'm loving the impact West is having at scrum time and he's one of those deceptive props who seems to always trouble his opposite number. SM and ZZ still to come means we're in good shape at LH.
