Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: marler
« on: January 05, 2023, 10:55:21 AM »

I'm sure I can read the disciplinary report to find out, but I'm not sure how the disciplinary board came to the conclusion that they could knock off a significant amount of weeks from a ban that, in my opinion, is justified. I fear that the ban has something to do with potential England participation or his off-field antics (which I have now started to find very boring) have something to do with him getting a punishment as light as he has.

Unfortunately, rugby is corrupt from top to bottom, so I suspect that it is to allow his participation in the 6 Nations.
Yep, just what it looks like. No mention of the fact that the whole incident was sparked my Marler kicking a player on the ground, far more serious than some childish sledging. According to the statement Marler's "very poor disciplinary record" was taken into account by the panel in determining a suitable sanction. They then suspend 4 weeks of a 6 week ban????

Let's correct that shall we? "Marler's very poor disciplinary record was completely ignored but his potential participation in the Six Nations led to the minimum possible sanction thereby condoning his behaviour".

Pathetic.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Baxter Again!
« on: December 29, 2022, 09:12:16 AM »
This won’t happen but it is a delightful thought: Premiership rugby decide to proceed with the plan to reduce the Premiership to 10 teams so have to decide who to jettison into the Championship, they obviously ask Saracens, they-who-can-do-no-wrong, the perennial property developers and rugby cheats as they are the golden boys of English rugby and their opinion is vitally important. Remembering how vocal Baxter and Rowe were in their criticism, the EAs suggest the simple solution of relegating whoever was last to acquire Premiership shares- a “last in, first out” scenario. I believe the last club to acquire shares was Exeter.

Wouldn’t you just love to see Baxter’s reaction?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Local Team gets its digs in -
« on: December 20, 2022, 11:27:15 AM »
Well that is most certainly a rant and so full of contradictions it's actually difficult to make much sense of it!

Solihull is in their "Back Yard" is it? It's a hell of a lot closer to Birmingham than Coventry so you when we play them you could call it a Midlands derby in the same way as Tigers playing Saints but we're hardly going to be stealing supporters from them so what's the problem exactly?

So they changed their business model and survived Covid unlike Wasps? Congratulations but according to the RFU, Covid wasn't the reason that we went under, we had an unsustainable business model before then.

Apparently we shouldn't be given a "helping hand". What helping hand??? We've been stripped of our Premiership shares and relegated and the new owners had to undergo a rigorous check to make sure that the new business met sustainable criteria.

We think we're Real Madrid with our "Propaganda Machine" do we? You might want to be careful making analogies with Soccer teams, many of those have debts that make ours look like small change.

Forgive my ignorance of club ruby history but were Coventry really the best club in England in the 70s and 80s? I'd have thought that Bath and Tigers might dispute that claim.

But he's looking forward to a "proper local derby" even though we might be playing in Scotland. WTF????

He's got a lot to say for someone who doesn't pay us much attention!!! Idiot.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Abby Dow
« on: November 10, 2022, 02:10:11 PM »
Great game, thought she might have passed to Ellie Kildunne, also a former wasp, who was really matching her for speed, but she backed herself and was a great try.

Firstly, that was a simply superb try and was genuinely a team effort even if Claudia McDonald and Abby got the lions share of the credit. The defensive shift from the forwards to counter-ruck and turn over possession in what was a dangerous attack from Canada, then the vision and sheer nerve to spin the ball wide behind our goal line, Claudia's astonishing, jinking run and Abby's pace and delightful hand-off was one of the best moves I've seen on a rugby pitch for some time.

Must admit that I was screaming for Abby to pass to Kildunne when it looked like the defence was closing her down but then her pace got her clear. Kildunne really should have cut inside a little more to keep the defence guessing but academic really.

Finally, as many, many people have said, restart should have been a penalty to England for the needless, petulant and dangerous way the Canadian winger went knee first into Abby after she had grounded the ball. You see it a lot and it doesn't get penalised often enough for my liking, really cowardly.

By and large, Premiership referees have earned a reputation for consistency...
Really??? You might want to watch a few more matches matey....

Odendaal can also play 13, can't he?

Yes, and no. 12 and 13 are not interchangeable, unless your name is Eddie, and he does not play anywhere near as well at 13.
This is the key issue. It's not that we have a shortage of cover at 13, it's the lack of vision in our coaches who can't see the potential of other squad members at outside centre. If Eddie Jones was our DoR he would happily pick Brad Shields, Biyi Alo, Tom Cruse or Pudsey the kit man at 13.

Not that I'd know it since if EJ became head coach I wouldn't be watching the club any longer....

Unbelievably poor which is saying something given Eddie’s recent record. A record defeat, at home to a scratch side who played with 14 for three quarters of the match. We couldn’t catch the ball, couldn’t retain possession and couldn’t tackle. I’ve never been so embarrassed watching England.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Abby Dow bad injury
« on: April 11, 2022, 12:16:44 PM »
I think for this type of injury I would steer clear of the Fortius type self-promoters and go with a big centre trauma surgeon. Nottingham, Leeds, Bristol. Coventry has some good guys [maybe gals as well].
Thanks for the expert insight Backdoc, I was at the match and the injury looked horrendous. Without any announcement there was lots of speculation; someone saw that they had removed her boot and sock so assumed an ankle injury, when the second spinal stretcher was brought on we thought a bad back problem. Whilst horrible and clearly from Abby's screams very painful, a break does give here a slim chance of being fit for the World Cup in October whilst an ACL or ankle reconstruction would make it impossible. She really deserves to be there, fantastic player. Fingers crossed she gets some expert care and is back on a rugby pitch making those fabulous arcing runs and fending off defenders for fun as soon as possible.

There are a couple of odd calls in there. Alfie over Tom is one that gets me. Though Zack at 15 is the strangest
Agreed. Whilst I understand wanting to get Alfie on the pitch somehow, the stats show that Tom has been outstanding all season so very harsh to drop him.

Problem is Alfies next best position is probably at 6 any you don't drop Brad.

How nice is it to have these selection headaches after struggling to get 23 fit players available for much of the season.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Fra v Eng (spoiler alert)
« on: March 20, 2022, 11:10:56 AM »
This years Six Nations was pretty dire as a contest. France and Ireland are playing rugby on another level to the other 4 teams so there's was only one meaningful match which was France v Ireland to determine who would be Grand Slam Champion. The rest were fighting it out to decide who was least worst and the final table is a pretty fair reflection of the pecking order.

England, Scotland and Wales served up some utter dross for much of the tournament. Wales had the most shocking drop in form; Champions last year to 5th place losing at home to Italy is going to make for a grim post tournament review. They seem to suffer when their talisman Wyn Jones isn't fit and Bigger is a dreadful skipper. Scotland need to get over their obsession with beating England, they celebrate a victory like they've won the World Cup and then completely fail to raise their motivation to beat anyone else! Guys, you're far from the only country who hates England but everyone else manages to be a little more professional and treat every match as one they want to win.

As every one has said, both professional media pundits and us armchair experts, England are suffering at the hands of Eddie Jones. He quotes utter guff about "building for the world cup" then picks a seemingly random team that he thinks have the game to beat that weekends opposition. As the team haven't actually played together before they inevitably lose. If you pick a consistent team and combinations get used to playing together you should be looking to impose your game on your opponents and should be good enough to adapt to defend against their strengths. That is precisely what France and Ireland have done. They're also building for the World Cup and I know who is more likely to win it and it isn't England.

England show in brief glimpses that there is quality there, with the right coaching they could genuinely mount a challenge but they need players playing in their regular positions, an identity and game plan with a back-up strategy when plan A isn't working. None of that is going to happen with Jones at the helm.

Congratulations France on a thoroughly deserved victory playing some sublime rugby. Player of the tournament is obviously Josh Adams for the wonderful gesture handing his man of the match medal to Ange Capuozzo. That speaks volumes about why rugby is such a fantastic sport that we love so much even when our own teams are playing like muppets.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Red Cards
« on: March 13, 2022, 11:48:16 AM »
I’m going to play devils advocate here but does anyone else think that the prevalence of red cards for high tackles is making a mockery of the game at present. Don’t get me wrong, I’m totally in favour of doing everything possible to make the game safer but not at the expense of rugby being an entertaining sport. One player goes into a tackle with poor technique and his entire team is penalised by being reduced to 14 and 9 times out of 10 lose the march as a result.

What doesn’t rest easy with me is that if you lose your rag and deliberately and with considerable malice punch an opponent you get exactly the same sanction as going into a tackle standing upright. Don’t forget that an “upright” or choke tackle is a legitimate technique to create a maul and earn a turnover.

Just an idea but how about some sort of “Orange” card? The guilty player is sent off permanently but the team can bring on a replacement after 10 minutes so it’s a halfway house between a red and yellow. The guilty player is left understanding that he has to improve his technique and the team is weakened by losing a first choice player and being reduced to 14 for 10 minutes but it is far less likely to dictate the result.

Thoughts?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Brian Moore Talking Sense - Again.
« on: March 01, 2022, 12:57:31 PM »
The scrum is a way to restart the game with contested possession with the non offending team given the advantage of put in and head.

To avoid teams milking penalties the answer is very simple. Instead of giving a massive advantage penalty from a scrum, just give possession to the team who would have got a penalty by means of a free kick with no option of another scrum.  That way, a dominant scrum could either win clean possession from the scrum or the free kick. Same result. If that were the case I bet scrums would be mostly completed first time.

Should a team constantly give away free kicks because their scrum can't compete legally the yellow card option still exists. It's the scrum penalty that's the problem.
Could not agree more. It's a simple case of looking at the principals of the game. If you have a dominant scrum, you win possession, NOT the chance to kick 3 points or go to the corner potentially to gain 7. A Free Kick awarded would solve a multitude of problems and I definitely agree that the vast majority of scrums would be completed.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Building the Future
« on: February 16, 2022, 10:43:42 AM »
I really like what we’re doing. Sustainable, sensible and exciting.
Agreed. I think this is likely to become the norm, the headline-grabbing marque signings are going to become few and far between due to both the reduction in the salary cap and the economic realities of running a professional rugby club which have been highlighted due to the Pandemic. Historically we've done extremely well bringing academy player through, that and picking up "waifs and strays" from other clubs. No reason why we can't be successful again doing the same thing, Chief's success wasn't built on signing a squad of superstars (unlike certain other clubs...)

How many more before he has played for the entire Premiership?
He's now level with Goody having played for six Premiership clubs although Goody had two stints at Tigers. Both also spent time with a French club (Ashton at Toulon and Goode at Brive)

Believe it or not both are outdone by Andy Gomarsall who played for 7 clubs albeit only two appearances for Bath

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Officials for Bath match
« on: February 10, 2022, 10:31:47 AM »
I'm not saying he's a bad ref, just questioning why we are seen as the place for junior refs to learn. I know this is hugely biased of me but my feeling is we don't push the laws as far as some clubs. Does that make us easier to referee?
This will sound hugely disrespectful to Bath but I'm guessing that they've looked at our recent form and Bath's last outing and considered that it's not likely to be a close contest at which the referees performance will be under the microscope therefore a less experienced ref can be appointed. Those considered the better, more experienced referees will be appointed to the matches likely to be a tighter battle.

I hope they are right but also hope that we're not underestimating Bath in any way shape or form. Potential banana skin.
