Wasps Rugby Discussion / A nice problem next year?
« on: July 01, 2020, 05:45:46 PM »
Looking at our squad next year it strikes me we may have a pleasant problem emerging. International call ups have not really been a consideration outside of JL and MM but looking at next year it is conceivable the following list could be called up:
JL, WR, MM, DR, JU, ZZ, TT, BS, JW, JB.
It's inconceivable Willis won't be called upon. A nice problem to have and who ever knows what EJ will do. But it could start being a factor for us.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Utility back rower available?
« on: June 29, 2020, 07:09:29 PM »
Since the announcement that Carr was leaving there has been some talk of us needing a utility back row player to supplement our excellent first up options. Just read that Jamie Gibson has been released by Northampton. I've never seen him have a bad game. He's 29 so not past it by any means but would hit the ground running. Shouldn't break the bank and presumably is relatively local. A possibility?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Anyone expecting new signings?
« on: June 13, 2020, 10:25:33 AM »
Given the way Wasps marketing department operates I've never known them end a string of announcements on some bad news. This weeks leavers communications are just that. So what comes next? We've had the re-signers. It can only be new signings. If that is correct which positions do we want to see new blood in? I'd like some second row cover and a back row utility player. Think we're well stocked otherwise.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Contract status?
« on: May 26, 2020, 04:16:13 PM »
Trying to mentally assemble next years squad in my head. Does anyone definitively know the contract status of:
Shields
Carr
Morris
Cruse
Zhvania
T Willis
De Jongh
Johnson

I think I'm ok on all the rest coupled with Mills, Edwards, Barbeary and Simonds in.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Who plays if the season is extended?
« on: April 05, 2020, 03:18:28 PM »
Amongst the massive uncertainty surrounding the current season it seems likely that some sort of extension looks like the only way round it. If that goes ahead what happens to players whose contracts were up at the end of the original season? Presumably some sort of workaround will have to be put in to extend their contacts by default?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / DoR
« on: March 08, 2020, 01:54:06 PM »
I think anyone who's seen us over the last three or four games would have to admit it's like watching a totally different team. There was improvement at Bristol and Wuss but things look a lot more free now. Given that has Blackett become the man for the job? Or should we consider the range of applications we have to hand. We look a top 4 side again now and the players are brimming with confidence and playing with smiles. Is it a case of if it's not broken don't try and fix it?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Lo-an behold
« on: February 27, 2020, 09:04:34 PM »
Apologies for another Sarries based post but I was really hoping that the rugby community would desist from the temptation of taking any of them on loan. I see Earl and Malins are likely to go on loan to Bristol. Why would any club consider a loan? They get two non-committed players hanging about waiting for their real club to get promoted. When they do re-emerge they are honed to benefit Sarries again having been kept in Prem condition so that they can compete against the former loan club. The loan club help Sarries and have to re-shape their squad after just one season. I don't get it.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Why?
« on: February 22, 2020, 09:15:45 AM »
Still digesting last nights wonderful performance. It was like watching a different team. Why? Style of play seemed different as we kicked a lot less and kept ball in hand virtually all the time. But was it for Dai? Was it because he's gone? Was it just one of those games? If we put a couple more games like that in does Blackett come into the frame? Utterly fantastic to watch but also intriguing in almost equal measure as to how and why such a difference was possible.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Squad stability.
« on: February 10, 2020, 07:12:39 PM »
So we've reached early to mid Feb and no major squad announcements. Personally this is the kind of "contract and movements" season I like. We've really only had good news with JL, MLB extended and no confirmed departures. Next year Vellacott will seem like a new signing. Presumably we'll see more Academy prospects step up into the main squad and the likes of Umaga, Owlett, T Willis, Oghre and Spink will be given valuable game time. For me we're reaching a nice, stable place which will translate into a good league position next year.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / The Year.
« on: December 31, 2019, 03:14:30 PM »
I don't think anyone would argue the calendar year 2019 has been great for us. However there must be some good things that have happened. Be interesting to see what others have thought. If you had to list three positives from the year what would they be (no negatives allowed)! Mine would be;
1) Emergence, development and additions of academy players to first team squad.
2) The win away at Exeter. A great result, a big relief, Zhvania going over.
3) Announcement of training ground location. A solution to a problem we've had for a while and a decent indicator of stability.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Team of the decade.
« on: December 30, 2019, 02:23:21 PM »
Just seen that as we move towards the 20's Rugby Pass has put together a Wasps starting 15 of the decade. Agree with some of their picks but mine would be;
Mullan
Taylor
Brookes

Launchbury
Wentzel

Willis
Carr
Smith

Robson
Gopperth

Flutey (bit of a stretch)
Beale

Varndell
Piatau
Wade

Some difficult leave outs such as Jones, Betsen, Daly, Shaw, Simpson, Cipriani, Smith, Le Roux and Cittadini.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Is the message right?
« on: December 26, 2019, 02:44:59 PM »
I'm not really one for attaching much relevance to what coaches say to the press but I'm just wondering what underlying, almost subconscious mindset is being fostered at the club. So far this season before the Sale, Glaws and now Briz game Dai has included in his pre match narrative something akin to "it's important to come away from away games with something" referring to lbp's or tbp's. Is this correct? Is this seeping into the players consciousness? Does it tell us how Dai rates his squad? Don't get me wrong, it's wrapped up in the usual "we're going there to win" bits but if it were me I'd just talk about winning.

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Ref mike?
« on: December 21, 2019, 07:59:42 PM »
In no way making excuses for another loss but just intrigued. With the naked eye from the other end of the ground it looked to me like almost half the Quins team were on the wrong side following our third line out on their five metre in the last couple of minutes. Did Barnes say anything which explains how they got away with it?

Wasps Rugby Discussion / Next six?
« on: December 09, 2019, 08:00:34 PM »
We're probably all agreed that our next batch of Prem fixtures are going to be absolutely crucial. If we take the next six that takes us to halfway. We face Quins, Saints and Sarries at home and Bristol, Wuss and Tigers away. How many points do we need and how many will we get. I reckon we'll get 5 v Quins, 4 v Saints 0 v Sarries, 1 v Bristol, 4 v Wuss and 4 v Tigers. Very speculative of course but that would give us 18.
