Wasps Rugby Discussion / Re: Premiership Rugby - Season Review, Wasps

It's amazing how long we lingered in the top 4 last year. Easy to forget that section given what happened the other side of Christmas.

Fully agree with the consensus that we're possibly thin around lock, 12 and 15. Second row for me we have the numbers but not the (proven) quality whereas 12 and 15 we are ok if injuries don't bite but exposed if they do. I can't see us signing anyone else so what are the answers. I think Neal could play at either 12 or 15 and I'd like to see more of him. Fekitoa can do 12 with JdJ more than capable at 13 if he does. Second row wise we have to pin our hopes on Matthews working out and Gaskell staying fit.

Don't know anything about him but for me it's the right area to recruit in. Much was made of our frailty in defence last year but the bigger issue was our attack. For me the defensive issues were as much about mindset as organisation and we occasionally defended well whereas we were coherent in attack far less often.

This season will hopefully be the reverse of others in that we won't start off with as many 'galacticio's' but we might finish off with some (or some on their way to becoming one). As others have said we still have our share in the likes of Sopoaga, Shields, Fekitoa, Launchbury and Young. Alongside these we'll have Willis x 2 developing, Robson and Vellacott looks exciting and Bassett and Watson could be touching on England selection if they continue their form. On the strength and conditioning I don't think there's anything in it in terms of measurable differences between us and others. Especially last season I suspect we played a load of games with players on the field who shouldn't really have been.

I'm always optimistic but I think with good reason this year. For me we have a better balanced squad this year both in terms of options and the mix of youth and experience. Hopefully we'll have a bit more luck with injuries and a few less bizarre distractions as well.

I'd been thinking about options at 15 and interesting to see some thought about Bassett playing there. I'd been mulling the idea of Neal playing there over.

Looks strong to me. The only chink is at 12 if Gopperth gets injured for me but we do have cover/options. Sweating on news of Minozzi and Robson's fitness. That will be crucial.

In terms of new signings I'd like to see Vellacott. I think we've acquired a serious talent there. I'd be interested to see how Gopperth is going as he is so crucial to us. I suppose I should have a look at a forward so I'd have a look at Toomaga-Allan in the set piece.

This is starting to niggle now. I'm wondering if Wasps need to be more aggressive in the press about all this. There again there's a big part of me that applauds Wasps for staying out of it.

Getting Kibirige over the line would be welcome. Interesting to hear that AWJ rumoured to be linked with Bristol. He's the sort of lock many have been wanting at Wasps. I guess if there's any truth in it the Bristol offer could be as ludicrous as the one they offered Hughes and as such we'd be priced out.

Financially it must have some negative impact on Wasps even if it's just the rent!
Yes, they'll lose what was a very low rent. Conversely it frees up 20 odd days when they can use the Ricoh for other purposes. We never got ticket revenue and only a share of food etc. There's a strong chance we'll be better off for it.

Terrible for CCFC fans who are being treated like dirt but I fully understand and support Wasps stance. Wasps have done nothing but try to be accommodating and continually have it thrown back in their face. Financially I can't see it having any negative impact on us.

I'm genuinely excited about this squad. The names on paper give us good options in themselves but there are two other factors which I believe will play a big part. 1)Most will be available all season . 2) All appear to want to be here and we seem to be looking forward to the prospect of a season where rugby rather than constant speculation and unrest are to the fore.

The whole saga is a bit depressing now. Disenchanted fans, a once proud set up now hawking itself around for somewhere to play, the main participants constantly warring with each other and no real prospect of them ever giving up. But enough about the concert.....

Bass was quality in the first half defensively and took his try well, didn’t get much of a look in in the second half.

TT didn’t see much of tbf.

Fekitoa looks v exciting and while thinking about how we might line up next year I was wondering if his capabilities at 12 as JdJ would be unlucky to not feature more regularly at 13. Fekitoa looks pretty decent with ball in hand and his passing looked pretty good so maybe having Lima and Fekitoa at 10/12 with JdJ outside them would be a pretty good set up for the next year or 2.

Do agree about Williams, far too good for championship, offers a little bit of everything you’d want at 12 (except kicking).
Agree about the centres. We've developed a habit in recent seasons of having better and more options at 13 than 12. I see both Fekitoa and De Jongh as 13's who can do 12. That's ok, but the key to it all once again becomes Gopperth staying fit.
